I stared at the sunset through my dark, ragged hair. The low flare of light shimmered across the water in a large ripple. The warm water washed over my bare feet while I sat on the sand, rested on a fallen palm tree. Lillia sat beside me, smiling. Her face shone like the stars above, the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. She played with the ringlets in her long blonde hair. Staring at them unravelling around her index finger before her diamond blue eyes. She beamed up at me and showed me a turquoise stone which shone in the light. She sighed.
“ It’s beautiful isn’t it?” She was staring at the stone which she was twirling in her hand in front of the light so that the sun shone through. I smiled at her, trying to think of something to say. My mind was blank. I nudged her arm and began to tickle her stomach. Her gaze on the stone was broken and she began to roll about on the sand in fits of giggles. She wriggled free and rolled me over. She sat on me, wiped her hair out of her eyes and smiled. I glanced at my watch.
“Is that the time? I need to be home soon. My mum’ll kill me!” I rolled Lillia back over and stood up, wiping sand off me.
“Thanks for dropping me on the floor!” Lillia said with a smile. She tucked her hair behind her left ear and grabbed my hand so I could pull her up. My eyes met hers. I gazed into her deep-blue eyes, I thought I might fall in. Then she snapped me out of my trance.
“I better be getting home.” She hugged me and ran up the beach. “See you tomorrow Astril!”
“Wait!” I called. She looked back. “Erm . . .”
“Yes, Astril?”
“. . . Race you!” She smiled.
“Catch me if you can!”
