Without thinking, locket in hand, I bolted out of the front door, into the street. I knew what I had to do. The road was empty apart from the black shape making it’s way out of town. I could never catch up to it at this rate!
Suddenly, I had a brainwave. I rushed back into my garden. My bike was handily placed by the front door. I dragged it out onto the road and pedalled furiously toward the shape. I found myself at the top of a hill. I could see the black shape heading towards the beach.
I looked down. The hill was steep. I could be cycling to a gritty injury. But then I remembered Lillia.
I slammed my foot hard on the pedal and accelerated down the steep hill, gathering speed as I went. I was getting close to the bottom of the hill, ready to break. Then suddenly, a cat jumped out in front of my bike. I swerved and missed the cat, but I was then plunged into a rose bush. Thorns were ripping through my clothes like miniature swords slashing at a carcass.
The shadow shape flew out of my sight and I began to loose hope. I could never catch up to it now. I looked to the side and saw Lillia’s locket, tangled on a thorn. I remembered when I gave it to her. We were so young and she looked so happy. She never got around to showing me what was inside. I thought back to a day at the beach when I asked what was inside. She’d stuck her tongue out at me and said:
“It’s MINE. It’s my little secret and you’ll never know what’s inside!” then she smiled at me and whispered, “Someday you’ll see.”
Just remembering her smile bought tears to my eyes. What if she’d been harmed? She may even be dead! Anger swelled up inside me again and I regained my balance. I remounted my bike and set off once again, after the black shape.
