Chapter One: Love is medicine/ Spring 1st

Elli had finished organizing the files when she stared at the clock. A quarter till twelve. She smiled as she thought out loud. "The doctor and I should be picking herbs soon. I wonder if I should make a small picnic." This was the only real time she got to spend with the doctor besides when he was checking patients or her grandmother.

The door slammed open as she looked up with the files in her hands. A man walked inside. Elli had never seen him before as she gave him a weird look. He was about 6 ft. He looked around 20 to 21. He had brown hair and brown eyes, but most of his hair was covered by a cap he wore. He wore overalls with a checkered shirt underneath. He looked at her, smiled, and waved. She felt her face turn a light red.

"What is he doing here? Where is he from?" He walked to the doctor’s office as Elli snuck behind him. "Good Afternoon" the man said as he tapped his cap. "Afternoon..." Said Trent with a raised eyebrow. "May I help you?" He sat in his chair. The man settled his bag on the doctor’s desk. Herbs were in different containers fell out of the bag. "I saw your poster at the square, so I picked all the herbs I could in the Valley." He handed some to the doctor. Trent looked at them."This is marvelous! These are from all over the Valley right?" The man nodded. "If you could gather these every other day, you would save me time and we could make so much more medicine! I'll even pay you...." "Adam, sir." "Thank you so much Adam!" Trent shook his hand as Adam smiled.

Elli's face went pale as she dropped the files. "H-how can he just say that...?” Elli thought as she looked down at the mess she made. She started to pick up the files as she noticed two boots in front of her. She kept her head low. "Do you need help?" Adam said as he got down on his knees and helped her up. "No... I'm fine...” Elli said as she looked away. "Alright." He smiled and ruffled her hair. He headed toward the door. "See you Thursday Trent." As he vanished into the village.

    Later that afternoon

Elli was walking home when she saw a dog run by. She started to think why it was running when Adam slammed into her. "What was that for?!" She got up and brushed off her dress. She glared at Adam. He was breathing heavily and it looked like he had been crying. He spoke slowly and out of breath. "Have you seen....a middle sized dog....run by...here?" Elli blinked and shook her head. "Yeah like a minute ago... why?" Adam started to cry a little again. "It was my dog. I was cooking when the knife slipped from my hand and landed not to far from him. He woke up scared and darted out the door. I'm so worried." He stared at her with his brown eyes. She thought of her little brother Stu suddenly.

She sighed and nodded. "Fine." A small smile curved at his lips. "Thank you so much!" He quickly got up and ran down the street to the inn calling out the dog’s name. Elli walked back down the street and sighed. 'Why am I helping him again?" She thought. She checked by the bench near the super market. "No dog." She walked pass the Hospital and kept her head down. She walked over to the church and saw something move in the graveyard. She walked inside the gate and looked around.

She looked at the spot where she had seen the object. She saw a dog curled into a ball and whimpering. "So this must be Rusty..." She looked at the dog and started to move closer as it raised its head and stared at her. She stuck out her hand as the dog slowly moved its muzzle towards it. The dog slowly licked her hand as it continued to sniff it. Elli slowly moved her hand toward its collar. "Come here Rusty." The dog crept forward. He slowly started to climb in her lap as Adam started to run up the street. "Rusty!! Where are you?!" Elli raised her hand from behind the grave as she kept petting Rusty. She heard Adam's large boots slam against the ground as he soon approached them.

"Oh, thank you thank you thank you." Rusty jumped off Elli's lap and jumped on Adam. Rusty started to lick his face as Elli couldn't help but smile. A light then turned on from the church as the priest stuck out his head. "Hey! What are you kids doing?!" Carter yelled. Elli replied back.”Sorry father. We were looking for a lost dog! But we found it!" "Oh. Alright then... God wishes you a good night sleep!" Carter yawned then closed the window and turned off the light. Adam snapped a leash on Rusty. "Well I guess we better get home. Would you like us to escort you home?"

"Um...Sure...” Elli started to walk as Rusty and Adam trailed short behind. It was silent for a little then Adam spoke. "Do you hate me?" Elli stopped at looked at him. "What?!" Adam shifted his feet as he looked downward. "Well, you didn't look at me when I offered to help you earlier..." Elli looked away a little too. "No... I don't hate you... I was just thinking...” "About what?" Adam got up next to her. She felt her cheeks go light pink. "Stuff... personal..." "Oh, okay." Adam had his normal goofy smile on his face.

They stayed quiet until they reached Elli's grandmothers home. "Is this it?" "Yup." Elli gave a small smile as she started to walk away, then Adam spoke. "Hey, could I come by tomorrow again and talk to you? Or walk you home?" Elli turned. "Um... no. The clinic is closed on Wednesday...But you can come by on Thursday, alright?" She yawned. "Great! Alright then. See you Thursday!" Adam and Rusty raced home. Elli smiled a little as she walked inside and closed the door behind her.
