• He Who Never Smiles

Here I was. Standing in front of my new high school. Wearing something no one else was wearing; a black skirt with blue sparkles around it, black leggings, a top that had the saying 'I'm the one everyone ignores but sees' plastered right across it in bright red letters. The background color was black, like the hair I had put up so that it was in a ponytail that was spiky. I gritted my teeth as a girl ran past me, squealing some guy's name and wrapping her arms around his neck when he rushed to her.

I knew I was headed for hell, but what gived? I still went to the side of the school to meet the teacher I had that day when the bell rang. The high schoolers took their time in walking towards the building. I rested my weight on my hips and crossed my arms, pretty much glaring at the students around me. All their backpacks were shoved off to the side, piled on each other like useless pieces of trash. "Okay." My teacher said, clapping her hands. "I'd like to introduce our newest member to this school, J-" "No one cares." She looked at me astonishingly after I closed my mouth, as did most of my classmates.

She quickly recovered and made up her mind not to introduce me after all as she turned to a group of boys who were laughing and walking towards us all. "Late again boys!" she said, tossing them each a heart shaped cushion. "What's this for?" one of them snickered, nudging the other. "Are we gonna fall asleep in each other's arms?" Two of the four other boys laughed. One of them rubbed his pillow against his cheek. "Awww…" he coed. "It's SO soft!!" Some of my 'lovely classmates' laughed, but my teacher just continued passing out some more heart shaped cushions, the look on her face making it clear that she didn't want to deal with them again. "Is it Valentine's Day?" one of the guys asked, throwing his pillow at his friend next to him. That soon started a revolution and soon four heart cushions were flying in the air. "Where's the fifth?" I wondered, recalling on how there were five guys, not four.

Out of the wrestling, tussling, hitting, and tackling I could barely make out the 5th one who was sitting off somewhere behind the others. He was looking off in the distance and suddenly flinched when one of his buds threw a pillow in his face. I snorted and took the pillow the teacher gave me, moving my attention to a group of guys and girls nearby who were talking about monsters or something. When everyone finally had a pillow in their hands, (or somewhere in their friend's hair) the teacher held up her hand and called us to attention. "Okay! As there are now exactly eighteen people in this class I want you to split up into three groups of six each! Get moving!" "Oh great." I thought. "What a way to ruin my already crappy day." I remained where I was and leaned against the wall. Why were we even having our class outside? Maybe if I acted as if I weren't there no one would look at me or even think of making me one of their partners. Especially the teacher. (Those were the worst.) Of course, the group of guys and the group consisting of the guys and girls were together. There was another group of six made up of one guy and five girls, who were all hitting on him. (Man did I feel sorry for him.)

"Jeken? You don't have a group?" Those were the very words I was dreading, and they came from the very person I dreaded would say that. Why were teacher's so nosy?! I turned to her and was relieved when the other teenagers were too busy talking to notice what was going on. Only the one guy who was calm was noticing the teacher when she walked up to me. "No." I said, looking away stubbornly while I crossed my arms. "I don't need a 'group'." She took my arm and led me to the group of guys, who were now glancing at us from the corner of their eyes. "No way!!" I protested pulling away. The guys caught on to what was happening and split up, surrounding me. "Touch me you perverts and I'll-!" I never got a chance to finish because one of them put his hand over my mouth and lifted me up by my waist. "Up and away!" he shouted, running and making me crash into two of his buds who then hugged me. "Jeken? You don't have a group?" they repeated dramatically, laughing hysterically.

"Don't man-handle her for goodness sake!! She's not an object-!" The guys ignored the teacher and all stared at me except for the quiet one. I grasped a stick in my hand since I was on the floor. The boy who had lifted me up bent down. "Jeken… hmmm…. What kind of a name is that?" I could tell he was trying to mess around with me because he was smirking. "It's a name that means…. LEAVE ME ALONE, JERK!!!" I said. He winced as I threw the branch at him, and it must've hurt because it grazed his cheek deeply and he cried out. The quiet one stared at me for a long time. That was when I noticed something; he never once smiled since I saw him.
