As the living room carpet was finishing its weekly vacuum, the only daughter of the house cried in her room as the pain swelled around her. Her skin was boiling, her eight year old cries could be heard from down the lane. But no one was down the lane, so no one heard.
The girl cried and cried, until finally, she seemed to run out of tears. She quaked all over as she fell off the bedside and onto her vinyl flooring. With one final whimper and gasp, she stopped moving all together. Just stopped.
A broken dish on the kitchen floor shimmered in the light given by the chandelier. An automated claw from the sink reached down to pick up the pieces. Afterward, a small broom came and swept up the crumbs from the dish.

Out the window and down the way, not a house stood upright. There was not even a car on the lane. Nothing had remained standing until a mile out from the house, there was a small car. Inside the car was a cowering woman. She had skin the same as the little girl in the house.
The woman cried over the empty blue blanket in her arms, “Ian” was sewn into the top of the blanket, and that was the name that the woman kept repeating to herself. She finally stopped uttering her boy’s name when she came to lay her head down on the back rest of her car seat. She, as the girl before her, stopped moving.

“In other news, the ‘Rebirth’ project for the United States will be beginning in ten minutes on the Eastern edge of the country. What a fine day it is for humanity, wouldn’t you say Phil?”
    “Sure would Becky. . .”
The rest of the news was drowned out by the sound of the vacuum that the house sent out weekly. Carl Mortison groaned at not being able to hear his television. He walked into his kitchen where his wife Nina was drying the dishes that was used for that morning’s breakfast.
“You know there’s a button for that. . .” Carl smirked at his wife’s shrug. She never did like using machines to do “human” work. ‘Hypocrite,’ thought Carl, ‘didn’t you vote Septem09.1101 into office, or did you lie to me?’
The daughter of the Mortison’s was in her bedroom, staring out her window, waiting for “Rebirth” to begin,
“The ‘bot at school said it was gonna be like. . .like fire works, only way, way bigger. And louder, and. . .and. . .totally awesome-er!” Little Rebecca had told her father a few days earlier, “I can’t wait!”

A woman in a blue “bug” car sat at a street corner, about a mile out from the Mortison’s home. She smiled as she cuddled a blue blanket she had made for her three-month-old son, Ian. “I can’t wait to have you back, baby, I miss you so much.” The woman wiped the tears out of her eyes. She was told how to get the factory from the secretary in the building to her right. The woman was about to drive off when her car sputtered out. She sighed and called her boyfriend, “James? Can you come down here to the office, the bug stalled again?”
“Sure thing Jayne.” James’ voice rang through the phone before both he and Jayne hung up.
Jayne looked to her watch, “Five minutes, he’d better hurry.”

The screams of Jayne Niley stopped just as the cry of a baby started. The doctors surrounding her sighed with relief as they wiped off the baby boy.
“Ian, name him Ian.” Jayne smiled and fell asleep, completely exhausted.
There was a sudden commotion in the lobby of the hospital as officers of President Septem entered and took over. They all ran up to the Maternity Ward where they found the nursery and posted a notice outside of the room.

All children under the age of five will be escorted by the officers of the law to where they will be transformed to live in the “Rebirth”.
In three months, all parents will be able to pick up their children at their designated areas.
All children and adults who do not cooperate will be terminated.

    Signed:

Rebecca Mortison ran out to her father’s car after the bell rang and the doors opened. She giggled as Mr. Mortison picked her up and spun her before strapping her into the back seat of his car.
“So how was school today Becca?” Asked Mr. Mortison.
“Oh, it was fun, a ‘bot from the President’s team came to talk to us about the ‘Rebirth’ , we got out of every class,” She smiled and bobbed up and down to the song on the radio, “The ‘bot at school said it was gonna be like. . .like fire works, only way, way bigger. And louder, and. . .and. . .totally awesome-er!”
“It really said ‘awesom-er?” Mr. Mortison asked.
Becca giggled and shook her head no, “I can’t wait! I mean, until the ‘Rebirth’, you know Daddy?”
“Yes sweet, I know.” Mr. Mortison’s smile faded as he looked to his right and saw the factory where children from all over the city were still being transformed to fit into society after the “Rebirth”.

President Septem09.1101 was sitting in his seat at the white house, “How many?”
“We have successfully launched eight missals around the 48 connected states, one to Hawaii, and three to Alaska. As you’ve asked sir.”
“Good, now leave.” Septem09.1101’s mouth glowed.
“Yes sir.” The head human of National Security nodded in salute to the ‘bot and went back to his office. Silent tears ran down the man’s face as he sat and stared at a picture of his wife and daughter, both terminated by the missals. Carl Mortison wiped the tears from his eyes and went back to work on his boss’ next project, releasing the “hu-bots” from the factories and letting them create “Society, 2.0”
