• Asmara had fallen asleep after the great meal she had had for dinner that night. She was woken up by shouting and eager voices outside her window. There were claims that a dark angel had been on the roof earlier and that he had gotten away. There were angry voices outside her bedroom door.
“Have you been on guard Kamiel? The night watchman claims that before he was knocked out by the demon he saw it headed for my daughter’s room. Now tell me that you were on watch.”
“Of course I was.” Kameil said defensively. “I was right here, like always. I didn’t hear anything from her room. Not even a scream.”
King Aslif barged in the room assuming the worst. Asmara looked at him quizzically as if she hadn’t eavesdropped on the whole conversation. The king looked embarrassed for barging in on her, but then he seemed to think better of it and walked slowly up to her.
“Are you alright? I heard a dark angel was loose and might have entered the room.”
Asmara looked all scared and innocent for his benefit but he noticed the note on her bedside table and grabbed it up before she even knew he saw it. He read it in one quick flash of his eyes and then was accusing her of fraud.
“You aren’t mourning Tamari aren’t you? You are dating on enemy lines.” He slammed his open palm on the table making her flinch back.
“No daddy, I would never! The angel of darkness obviously doesn’t know what species he’s blindly crushing on. I didn’t even see the man’s face.”
King Aslif smiled at his daughter. “I’m glad to hear it. Now get some sleep.”
Asmara smiled at her father and watched him turn to leave, but before he reached the door a guard known as Balifstar ran up breathless.
    “Spit it out son.”
Balifstar gulped air for a few seconds and then obliged. “Your kingship sir, a girl was murdered by the demon that was spotted near her majesty’s window… Or at least I think it was the same demon.” He looked at the floor his eyes round.
“Let’s hope so. We wouldn’t want the enemy blindsiding us over night, just in case, put out more troops on watch.” He glanced over at Asmara and then left the room.
Balifstar stayed where he stood, appearing shaken.
“Balifstar, tell me about the girl.”
He looked flattered that she knew his name and then surprised. “You don’t want to know the gory details princess.”
    “Aw but I do.”
He shifted uncomfortable. “Well I had heard voices so I went to investigate. I saw- I saw a girl getting her life sucked out of her like she was just a beverage.” Asmara let out an angry snort.
He glanced up apologetically. “Sorry princess, I’ll attend to your father’s orders.” He stumbled and ran out of the room.
Asmara bit her lip trying not to laugh. Balifstar was her favorite guard elf. He was always a little on the nervous side but yet he was always loyal when it came to his work. Low whispers seeped under the crack in her door. She went over to listen careful not to make any noise herself.
“Don’t let her out of her room. There are high stakes right now that she may be in danger. I will not forgive you if she gets hurt.”
    “Yes your majesty.”
“Did you hear that princess? You are not to leave that room.”
I blushed and went over to the window staring up at the moon. Then a thought occurred to her: maybe he was watching after her. She looked down into the shadows expecting the bloodthirsty angel from hell to be laughing at her from a hidden perch under her window. To her disappointment he wasn’t. She sighed and went to rest on her bed.

Ezekiel felt like the day had gone by in a blur. He examined himself in the mirror and adjusted his black tank so it was straight. He snorted giving up. He wasn’t the type to care too much about his looks. (haha yeah right) He positioned himself at his window and launched into the night. He soared, coasting softly over his kingdom feeling the wind whip through hid hair and jet black feathers, like a fish admiring its scales in the water.
He dodged through the trees playfully enjoying the freedom he never earned from his father. He reached the lake in a matter of seconds landing perfectly on the smooth water polished rock at the lake’s shore. He looked around, and was disappointed to see that the princess hadn’t seen his perfect landing and even more so that she wasn’t there at all. His teeth bared in frustration.
Leaves rustled in the breeze behind him making him excited. He looked over his shoulder. It was a doe. He turned slowly and crouched watching the deer munch hungrily at the leaves. It seemed at ease or at least didn’t acknowledge that he was there. He smiled and pounced barely missing the deer’s tail. It grunted in pain and bolted. The hunter and its prey danced in the wide spread forest for a few minutes, before Ezekiel got bored and tagged the thing with his fangs and claws. After feasting on her carnage he took flight back to the lake, hoping Asmara was there.

Asmara arrived at the lake just when Ezekiel swooped down from his hunt. She stared horrified as he came closer, showing his true colors. Deer blood was smeared on his chin and his eyes glowed a magnificent red. He was covered in a sheen of glistening sweat.
She glared accusingly at him. “You killed that innocent elf girl didn’t you?”
He smiled “You have no proof of that.”
    “A guard saw you.”
“Really, and how did he know it was me?”
    “He saw your earrings stupid.”
“Oh.” She felt bad that she was lying but she found out what she needed.
She pulled up the best solemn face she could manage, shocked at how easily it had come. “I can’t do this Ezekiel. You aren’t the kind of man a princess like myself, should be with. Our species are enemies, Ezekiel. Surely you understand.”
“Again with the enemy’s analogy. Surely you can find another excuse than that?”
“I’m sorry Ezekiel. This isn’t going to work between us.” She found that she was crying.
“Then why did you come in the first place? You wouldn’t have come if you didn’t have the same feelings as I do.”
    “I – I…”
“See you don’t have an excuse. You are a hateful b***h that doesn’t have a clue what she’s talking about.”
His hurtful accusing words stung. She recoiled from it. Her ankle slipped on the watery stone and fell backwards. Ezekiel caught her wrist and pulled her into his chest.
“Careful, wouldn’t want to get your royal robes soaked.”
Asmara pushed away from him. Seeing the amused smirk on his face she wanted to slap it off of the face of the earth.
“I guess the rumors are true then, you blood thieves don’t have hearts. Your hate was replaced by a dark hole!”
She turned and ran tears streaming down her face; his hurt face imprinted in her mind for what she thought would be eternity.
