Chapter Eight:
He was standing in front of the school, much to everyone's surprise, even to the students who didn't know him very well. It was almost as though wiL Francis had come back from the dead. Most of the gang greeted him warmly but Claire, the one person he really wanted to see, hung back. She was too nervous to move. Faris looked down at her, wondering why the boy made her so afraid.
"Claire!" wiL shouted in her direction but she didn't look up. It was almost as though she had died on the spot. It didn't even seem like she was still breathing. "Claire?" She still hadn't moved. Faris gently touched her arm but Claire was catatonic. Her black bangs hung in front of her face and beneath them, her expression was unreadable.
wiL went up to Claire. He shot a brief glance at Faris. He had never seen him before, so he suspected he was the British kid Jake had told him about. "Claire, did I do something wrong?" wiL asked her softly. It was at that she finally looked up.
"Why are you here?" She whispered. He was taken aback. "What do you mean? Aren't you happy to see me?" She didn't say anything. She viciously bit down on her bottom lip. It was her silence that hurt wiL the most. He nodded, glared venomously at Faris and began to walk off, his hands balled into fists.
"wiL!" It was Claire. He whirled around, hope in his eyes but it was quickly dissolved when he saw she had began to cry. "You can't keep doing this!" she yelled through her tears.
Before any of them could do anything, she began to run. Without hesitation, wiL ran after her. Faris was about to as well but Nick held him back. "Nah, man. This is between the two of them." "But I-" He started to protest but Nick simply shook his head and Faris kept still.

Claire didn't know where she was running to but she knew she had to get there as quickly as possible. She didn't know how long she had been running for but she had to keep going.
"Claire!" She heard wiL shouting from behind. She didn't know whether to stop or not. It was beginning to rain. The drops fell on her skin and made her shiver. She decided to stop. She looked back at wiL, who was gasping for breath.
"Claire, if you don't want to see me again, that's fine. If you want to go out with that British kid, that's fine. I just want you to be happy."
She stared at him and she wanted to cry again. "You remember the night before you were arrested?" The rain began to fall harder on the two of them. "Do you remember when you came to my house, through my bedroom window and promised me everything was fine?" "Claire, I-" "You promised, wiL! You promised everything was fine and then they arrested you two hours later!" "Claire-" "Do you remember how many drugs you were on? What you had to drink that night?" "I was on Speed, Claire. I can't remember what I drank," he said bitterly. "You're here and then you're gone. You say everything's fine but it never is. IT NEVER IS. wiL, what's going to happen when you're gone for good?" She had burst into fresh tears. "What's going to happen when you take too many drugs and you don't wake up the next morning? What happens when you turn 18 and you stop going to juvi and actually go to jail? I can't keep worrying about you, wiL, I can't!"
She fell to her knees and sobbed in her hands. "We all worry about you. We all care about you. Don't you ever think about how we feel?"
How could he tell her that everyday was spent thinking about her? About all of them? wiL didn't think she would believe him.
"I'll leave you alone then. I'll leave all of you alone and you'll never have to see me again."
"That's not what we want! That's not what I want! I just want you to stop. Stop the drugs, the drinking, the stealing. Please, just stop."
She was tired and she had been drained of energy. She was about to fall face first onto the concrete sidewalk but wiL caught her just in time. Claire began to cry into his shoulder. They sat in the rain for what seemed like a long time before either of them spoke.
"I am glad you're back, wiL. I just want to think this time, it's for good." "It will be," he whispered into her ear. She hugged him tightly to her body. "You'll always be my cupcake, you know that, right?" He kissed her gently on the cheek. He prayed to whatever power was up there that he wouldn't let her down.
