Chapter Nine:
For the next three weeks, Claire avoided Faris like the plague. She purposely arrived to her first period class late so she wouldn't have to talk to him before class started and during lunch, she was always on end, ready to spring out of her seat and run out the moment she saw him. Faris was beginning to get the hint, no matter how grim it was, and stopped going to cafeteria to eat and ate outside on the bleachers.
"You really can't do this to him, Claire. It's not right," said Carla one day over lunch. Claire had become incredibly quiet over the three weeks and barely ate anything during the lunch period but merely pushed her food around her plate. The Gang was getting increasingly more worried.
"What I am supposed to do then?" she mumbled more to her food then to her friend. She was limply holding her fork and it soon slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the plate. The sound seemed to linger in the air around the two tables. No one spoke and Claire didn't make a move to retreive the fork. Her bangs covered her face as she stared at the table below her. She looked like she might burst into tears at any second. The gang shot panicked looks at each other; their friend was slowly drifting away from them and there didn't seem to be anything they could do about it. At that moment, Claire slowly got up from the table and walked out of the cafeteria. No one knew where she was going but none of them decided to stop her.
She slowly walked out onto the football field, her feet feeling as though they were made out of lead. The world around her wouldn't stop spinning and her head ached. All she really wanted to do was sleep and never wake up but she continued to walk until she could see the bleachers and the tall, skinny goth boy that was sitting on them.
Faris looked up and, through his brown bangs, saw Claire zombie-walking over to him. He put down his sandwich for a moment and got himself up off of the cold metal and walked over to her. She looked as though she might fall over onto the grass at any moment. When he reached her, she merely stared at him and said nothing. Then, in a very small whisper, she said, "I'm sorry."
He quickly grabbed her and pulled her into a tight hug. He had caught Claire by surprise but she was too tired and sad to hug him back. Claire's arms hung limply by her sides and she didn't move a muscle but he hugged her anyway. He held her close to him for as long as he possibly could, hoping she would move, hoping she would make an attempt to hug him back. When she still hadn't moved, he finally let go of her and took a step backwards; although she looked tired and a bit worse for wear, she was still beautiful. He slowly brushed the hair out of her face and leaning over her, he gently kissed her forehead. "There's no reason for you to be," he said softly. "As long as you're happy with your decision, then I'll try my best to be happy for you."
At long last, she finally perked up. "What decision?" Faris looked at her conused. "Well, isn't it obvious? It's the whole reason why you've been avoiding me; you chose him." "Who, wiL?" Claire asked. Faris nodded. "What kind of decision did you think I made?" "Well, you like him, don't you?" Claire was silent for a moment. "Well, of course I LIKE him. He's one of my best friends," at this, she smiled weakly. "He's my cupcake." Faris looked bitterly at the ground, as if plotting to destroy it. "Faris, it could NEVER work between me and wiL. He's wonderful but he's unreliable and even though he's had a lot of issues in the past, he deserves someone a lot better than me." "Better then you? Who could possibly be better then you?!" Claire let out a hallow laugh. "I'm not special, Faris." "Well, whoever told you that must be out of their mind." "But-" "Look around you, Claire. Just for a second, take a good look at your life. You have plenty of friends who love and care about you and would do anything for you. That I'm sure of. And this wiL kid obviously loves you and would do anything for you as well. And then there's me...Claire, if you ever need me, I'll always be here. Always. We wouldn't all care about you if you weren't special." Claire looked up at Faris and standing on tip-toe, moved his bangs away from his eyes. It was actually the first time she had seen his whole face. His eyes were a dark brown and he was blushing a little. "Faris...you and wiL are two different people and I don't really deserve either you but I-" She was cut off by Faris' lips pressing against hers. They remained locked in the kiss for a few long moments until Claire gently pulled away. She was speechless; she couldn't even manage to stutter. She merely stared at him, her face completely red. Faris laughed and grabbed her hand. "Come on, darling. It's time for class," He said, all smiles. Claire, still speechless, merely nodded and allowed him to walk her to class. She prayed there were more where that came from.
