Of all the Homunculi, the one known as Envy is perhaps the most devious and spiteful. In the manga (and Brotherhood); Envy appears as a frail, relatively small being with the voice of a female and body of a male. It is a shapeshifter and because of this, its gender is never really specified. Even though it has the full ability to turn into anyone (even animals) at whim, it often opts for the look of its "favorite cute form". This being the aforementioned androgynous form. It constantly mocks humans for being "weak fools", and easy pawns to control. Indeed, it was Envy in the disguise of an Amestrian soldier who shot to death a lone Ishbalan child. This was the spark which ignited the Ishbalan Rebellions and massacres, taking millions of lives all in an act designed by the Homunculi.
Along with Lust and Gluttony, Envy travels abroad following Father's orders to the letter. It claims it doesn't like fighting (because it could damage its "beautiful" face) but throughout the manga it has shown to be an excellent hand-to-hand fighter. When pushed to a limit; or humiliated, Envy can turn into a giant reptile-like beast. Its massive body is composed of ancient sacrificed souls who still scream out in anguish. Its Ouroborus is located on its upper left thigh.
==== SPOILERS ====
When beaten out of all its power, Envy is finally forced to turn into its true form, this being a small parasite which resembles a tadpole. With no strength left in him, he is quickly cornered by Ed, Mustang, Scar and Riza Hawkeye. When confronted by Edward whether it was truly envious of human beings all along, Envy considers this the ultimate insult. With tears in its eyes, it rips out the small Philosopher's Stone in its chest, instantly committing suicide.
==== End of Spoilers ====
In the first anime, Envy is the oldest of all Homunculi, and slightly different in background. Though its cocky attitude and malice are still present, it is eventually revealed he was a male all along. The lost son of Hohenheim of Light and Dante, to be precise. Because of this, he harbors an intense hatred towards the Elric brothers and their father. In his twisted mind, he carries a self-destructive envy towards his step-brothers because they had what he never did -- their father's love.
