So my grandpa just got a virus on his computer and I have to admit this is a clever setup. First it's setup to look like an antivirus called security suite to fool the uninformed. It even has this "this is a free antivirus please pay for the full version" bit which would trick the uninformed into losing $70.
Now I'm not sure what all it does damage wise, but it's very annoying to deal with. Upon startup a fake virus scan begins with a crap load of fake infections found. Internet Explorer will block EVERY web page claiming that it has malware on it. Other programs like task manager and "add and remove programs" under control panel will not launch. The virus blocks them saying they are infected. I went to C razz rogram Files to look for an uninstall which I could not find which confirmed to me that it was a virus. Without being able to launch task manager I can't kill the process either.
Right now I'm trying a boot time scan with Avast! Antivirus. It's found one infection already and I'm hoping that is the one. A boot time scan scans your harddrive before launching the operating system so you can catch a virus before it activates. If this fails I have a long night ahead of me trying to fix it.
