A random collection of my thoughts
reflecting on WoT
I've been playing World of Tanks for a little over a year now. A month or so ago I started tinkering with recording games. My sister kinda likes MMORPGs. FlyFF in particular is one she's played off and on for a few years. The game is heavily grinding oriented and past level 60 hardly worth playing in my opinion. On private servers the EXP rates are different and can be a lot more fun. I'm not really interested in playing Fly or making videos because watching gameplay really sucks. WoT is more action oriented and strategy based where Fly is more just sit in place and keep attacking.

I guess that's a bit of an exaggeration, but WoT is definitely more interactive and strategy based. In FlyFF the lowest form of enemy is the Eyebat at level 1. One of the higher level enemies is called a Mushpoie. I'm sure there's a lot of enemies beyond the Mushpoie but I'm way too lazy to look them up. These enemies have different stats, but more or less the exact same behavior. Enemy AI is pretty fixed. They don't learn. They don't search for specific weaknesses. They just fight whomever.

For example in WoT I play artillery. For a while on Fly my sister was Full Support so she cast spells to heal or otherwise aid in the party. In Artillery I stay off in the back to lob shells down range. Both of our classes are heavily support oriented. We help in the battle, but we don't want to be sitting in the middle of the fight. In Fly some enemies spawn aggressive and if an aggressive spawn hits your healer they're in trouble but otherwise if they don't hit the monsters the monsters won't hit you. In WoT if your artillery gets spotted he becomes the top priority for everyone to kill because in a close quarters fight artillery is at a disadvantage. In Fly where most of the gameplay is targeting an enemy AI that cannot learn you don't have the challenge of WoT where the enemy learns. As you advance in WoT you learn and think of strategies to defeat your enemy and they learn similar strategies to try and defeat you.

Another challenge of WoT is damage. In most MMOs you have HP and that's it. HP dies. There are a few status affects that can impact performance but not to the extent of WoT. In WoT you have HP as well, but you also have modules and crew members that can be damaged during a fight. If your suspension breaks you're immobilized till your crew can fix it. If your cannon breaks you can't fire until the crew fixes it and when they do it will be less accurate. Destroy the engine and they're immobilized. Hitting the engine or a fuel tank risks catching them on fire. Fire will drain HP pretty fast until it kills you or it's put out. Damaged modules and injured crew happen all the time so you need to compensate for it and you can use that to your advantage in your strategy against your enemy.

In most MMOs you can have a healer or potions or some other means to heal yourself. Being able to restore HP can prolong your life incredibly. In WoT you can have a repair kit to heal crew members or a repair kit to fix a busted module, or a fire extinguisher to put out a fire but once it's been used you can't use it again so if someone or something gets ******** you have to deal with it till the end of the battle then you have to buy a new one and the only way to actually restore HP is to repair your tank after the battle is over so whatever HP you lose in battle is permanent for that fight.

Finally there's the actual fighting itself. In most MMOs there's an auto aim so you target an enemy and just attack. In WoT you have to manually aim every shot. A lot of physics go into this game. Depending on slope of armor and your distance from the enemy a lot of shots can just bounce off of them so you need to be smart when you choose your targets and choose where to hit them. In Fly you don't really choose where to hit them. The best they have is choosing an element to attack with to inflict more damage on an enemy but there are no key points on the enemy's body to attack so you can cripple them.
