Neon Genesis Evangelion
Taking place at the beginning of the 21st century, over half of earths population has been wiped out by the '2nd impact' that melted the polar ice caps. The world is under attack by giant biological monsters known as 'Angels', trying to bring about the '3rd impact' that would bring an end to all life. Conventional weapons are completely useless against them due to their usage of an AT (Absolute Terror) Field. The only means to stop them lies in the EVAs and their pilots. The base that houses them, and the last stronghold of mankind, is Tokyo 3. Forced to rely on an electrical umbelical cord, from Tokyo 3 the EVAs are Biomechanical giants that can only function for 5 minutes once unplugged. Events foretold by scrolls found in the Dead Sea that were never revealed to the public, hidden agendas of the government, of NERV, the fate of the world.

Evangelion held it's own for the most part. The characters both in physical design and in personality were realistic. It was released quite a number of years back, so it's styled/colored in a manner similar to GTO. It's a mecha based anime that strays from the conventional 'love story' ending. In fact, you might call it the polar opposite, the ending of 'End of Evangelion' shocked me. Either way, it's a double layered story. You can take it at face value, watching purely for the action, or you can watch it with the 2nd layer, the meaning for humanity.

The Scores:
Art: 10/10. The art quality was very consistent and the retro style is a nice change. The action sequences were done very well, though you might want to watch with a light on to avoid a seizure. razz
Music: 10/10. The music fit very well, both with the action and with the more serious aspects of the story. I just wish I knew what he was playing on that headset all the time!
Storyline: 6/10. The story lost most of it's credit for 2 reasons. 1) It's complicated. Not that it's wraped up in technical terms, it was fairly simple in that manner, but the reasoning of the scenarios, the relationships, the motivations, everything lacked a flow that I could follow. 2) A really unsatisfying ending. Neither the series itself nor the movie 'End of Evangelion' satisfied me. There was never a straight answer.
Total: 8.6/10. Still a respectable score, but the storyline lost me. (I'm gonna collect them anyway though XP)

There are 8 DVD's from the series, as well as 2 movies. I'm not really sure that they can be called OVA's, I don't know if they were shown on TV or not. One entitled 'Death and Rebirth' which I would not recommend renting or buying. It's basically just a review of the series. The 2nd is 'The End of Evangelion' which is supposed to bring the series to a close.
