Ordinarily I wait for an entire series to come out before I post a review. This time, it may not be necessary. In a world where humans and spirits co-exist, divine song players (otherwise known as 'dantists') partner with and use spirts to uphold order between the differing species and perform various jobs too difficult for technology to deal with. Phoron the Dantist and his partner, Corti the Crimson Goddess, are the main characters, and the story focuses on their relationship and the gap between humans and spirits.
A very promising series has come to a grinding halt in its viewability. Since the general flow of the storyline revolves around music, one would expect good tunes. Unfortunately, that's about all this anime has to offer. Weak character development, an inconsistency belonging to a second year art student, and lack of a linear plot make for a generally terrible experience. This series flopped big time.
The scores:
Art: 3/10
- While the lighting effects were cool and the characters somewhat reasonable, the great drop in points is on account of the inconsistency. For example, the unnecessary character stretch, which disproportioned and, frankly, warped a decent female.
Plot: 3/10
- I'm not fond of storylines that need to gap 13 or so episodes to finish a single arc, but this is not much better. The plot is leading to no definite end, there is no sense of purpose. It makes for a monotonous watch.
Music: 8/10
- Quite possibly the only redeemable point to the series, the soundtrack was effective. Upbeat without being techno, yet still holding to classic instruments. I'd say it fit the series well, but it would fit a decent series much better.
All in all, I give a flop score of roughly 5/10. If you're watching anime more for the music than anything else, this series is for you. For the rest of us, it's not worth a second glance.
