Chapter Eight The Tourbus
The bus driver, who was named Andrew, had driven all day before stopping at a rest-stop somewhere in Pennsylvania, close to the border of Ohio. As they pulled into the gas station, Andrew slid out of the chair, wobbled to where Aiden and Sami were sitting, and said “I’m done”, before flopping down on the nearest bunk and falling asleep instantly. Everyone looked at him wide-eyed for a moment before Nick leaped up from where he was sitting and shouted “NOT ME!” as he ran off the tourbus. Angel was next, sprinting off after Nick. The Jakes exchanged glances and shouted “NOT ME!” as the got off the bus, high-fiving as they left. Dakota, the guitar tech, heaved himself from the floor. “******** NO,” he said as he edged his way past wiL, Troy, and Sami. “I wonder if there’s anything vegetarian to eat here,” wiL thought aloud as he got up and out of the bus. “Guess you’re driving, Troy!” He shouted before Troy and Sami heard the bus door shut. “********!” shouted Troy. Sami laughed. “You should’ve said something!” she said, still giggling. “I was too busy staring at you,” he said, blushing a little. “What? Why? I’m not that pretty.” Troy gave her one of his looks that he usually reserved for when they were fighting about her t-shirt size. “Are you kidding? You’re gorgeous. Now let’s go; I need to eat something if I’m gonna be driving all night.” Troy and Sami got off the bus, walking hand in hand into the mini-mart, the automatic doors making the customary ‘ding-dong’ noise as they passed through. The rest of the guys were already there, stuffing garbage bags full of whatever they could get their hands on. Jake W. handed them each a bag. “The guy who owns the place must’ve just up and left. Fill up the bag and bring it back to the bus. I wanna talk to your girlfriend,” he said, wrapping his arm around Sami’s shoulders. She smiled to herself a little as Jake led her down one of the aisles; she had never been called someone’s girlfriend before. “Sami, how old are you?” he asked her when they were out of earshot. Sami looked up at him. “16,” she said as Jake grabbed a box of Snickers and a box of Twix and shoved them in the bag. “16, huh? I remember being 16…,” He said wistfully. Sami smiled. “You know, he’s been carrying around that Jack Skellington plushy everywhere. The one you gave him for his birthday. That was you, right?” Sami nodded. “For the first couple of weeks, he just couldn’t stop talking about it and about the beautiful girl that gave it to him. That plushy was attached to his hip until this afternoon.” “What did he do with it?” She asked. “He doesn’t need it anymore. He had you now. Sami, he loves you a lot. Trust me- he’s never blushed that much in his whole life.” Jake suddenly put his hands together as though about to pray and said in a loud, regal sounding voice, “YOU HAVE MY BLESSING!” then gave her a wink heavy with black eyeliner. Sami tackled him in a tight hug, which he hadn’t been expecting but returned happily. They hugged for a few moments before- “HEY! STOP STEALING MY GIRLFRIEND!” Sami looked up and saw Troy, dragging his garbage bag behind him, a huge pout on his face which Sami found adorable. Jake hugged her tighter, shooting a smug smile towards his brother, which only made the merchguy pout more. Troy grabbed the girl’s hand and wrenched her away from his older brother’s grasp. Jake waved as they went down the row and Sami blew a huge dramatic kiss good-bye. They were around the corner when Sami asked, “You’re not JEALOUS, are you?” Troy didn’t look at her but she could tell he was still pouting. “I hugged him because he said he gave us his blessing and I thought that was the best thing ever. That’s it.” Troy still wouldn’t look at her, though the grip on her hand softened a little. “Look, there’s only one Wambold brother for me and that’s you. Okay?” Troy nodded. He was trying to hide the smile that was growing on his face but he wasn’t doing a very good job of it. She kissed him on the cheek. “You’re such a dork.” Troy shrugged but he was still smiling. “Maybe I am. But I’m gonna be a tired dork if I don’t’ get some coffee in me.” The two of them walked to get some coffee but not before Sami shoved three boxes of Skittles into her garbage bag.
