Gebbet stared at my pale face and said. "Sir, what’s going on?! ”THE ORKS! THEY'RE USING THE UNDERGROUND NETWORK!".I yelled. I closed my eyes and took deep breaths, it cannot be helped. I had finally regained focus, calmed down, and said. "alright, order our heavy weapons we're gonna have to deal with this until reinforcements arrive. Map out all of the previous imperial guard networking system. we're going to have to kill their leader.....that would cause a civil war for the leader position and they'd kill themselves...get me a assassin damnit". A good commander must always be wary when it comes to wars and battles. Everything can change in the blink of an eye, for better or worse a commander must always adapt and always think of victory. If victory is impossible to achieve, he must kill as many as he can before he falls. However, I, unlike most, have aces in the hole ready incase somthing goes wrong, in the past too many things went wrong for me to make the same mistakes my superiors did. I opened the door to the HQ and waved Gebbet to follow. In less then a second he was by my side following. I walked outside of the main HQ and headed towards mechanized command. Along the way guardsmen saluted me, but even though they didnt move an muscle, I could tell they knew somthing big was going on. They had fought with me for so long that just by looking at me somthing had gone wrong or somthing unexpected had occured. Deep within their minds I could sense what they were saying, for i'd wonder the same exact thing. What could make their fearless commander, who had won them countless victorys, so stressed out?
I made my way to mechanized command and a tech-priest was standing outside, waiting for me. I approached him and asked
"Are the hellhounds(1) ready yet?".” they have just arrived lord" replied the tech-priest. With a breath of relief I said "good, send them to the south flank to not only protect our generator depot but to prevent the orks advance from the south". The mechanized command roared as the gates opened. Hellhounds came out in a line one by one. Then, knowing their orders, headed south. Once the hellhounds made it to the generator depot the orks launched their attack without hesitation. They poored out from the underground networks that the imperial guard once used on the defense of the city. They charged the hellhounds with no concern for their lives. if they were to die they would die with their thirst for battle quenched. The hellhounds then unleashed a hot stream of fire from their nozzles that, when made contact with its target, ignites the area in a swarm of fire. The target, in this case, was the orks. Perfect for the orks since they gather in large groups. The streams of fire hit and ingited the orks, burning them alive and turning their bodys into black lifeless corpses. The orks didnt even touch a hellhound in that charge. "Heh stupid greenskins(2) did they actually beleive that charge was going to work?." smirked Gebbet. "Were they stupid? Or blind by their lust for battle? they wanted to fight so badly they would rather be burnt alive then wait....don’t think all of the orks will act this way or you will soon find yourself with an axe in your back." I Implied.
I kept my hellhounds to the south to defend against the relentless ork assaults waiting for our heavy weapons to arrive. At this point I was merely stalling for time for I knew that if we didn’t get those heavy weapons we would be overcomed by the green tide. I sent a few guardsmen units to the north incase the orks decided to launch an unexpected attack. I was staying in the main HQ to monitor the status of the battle. Gebbet then came into the main HQ to inform me of the heavy weapons shipment and the situation. I turned to him and his face was of a childs who had done somthing wrong and was telling his father. Gebbet then said in dissapointment "The orks that our guardsmen were engaging on the outer strategic points all retreated. We can estimate that the orks took the underground network and are flooding to this city so our guardsmen are making double time getting here...also our artillery has finally arrived....but they only gave us a few earthshaker rounds(3)... saying that these should suffice". I slammed my fist into the wall and in anger said. "Damn Segmentum Command, they've always had it out for us...at least we have artillery....but we have to use the earthshaker rounds sparingly". Gebbet then turned my anger into slight relief by saying.” well sir, I was able to talk them into sending a few leman russ's(4)". I unclenched my fist and said without enthusiasm "So we have at least a little chance to hold off the ork tide until the reinforcements arrive". Segmentum Command has always had a problem with the 501st Cadian Regiment. It wasn't that we didnt fight or win battles, but it was the fact in the past we had been accused of heresy multiple times, getting the inquisition(5) involved with imperial affairs was a thorn in Segmentum Commands side. I had the leman russ's and the artillery set up in the rear of the guardsmen and ordered the artillery team to only load up and use the eartshaker rounds when I ordered. That was the typical imperial guard strategy, guardsmen in front and tanks in back. I however use a different tatic. If an enemy was to outrange the guardsmen, they would slaughter 4/5ths of the imperial guards fire power, and then easily destroy the tanks. So i put the tanks in front and guardsmen in back to use the tank as a shield as they fire lasguns on the enemy. Its not approved by most generals but i find it more effective. Against the orks however, guardsmen in front was a neccesity, so that orks wouldnt breach the lines and rip the tanks apart.
I was monitoring the battle when a voice from the shadows came and said "I am here to serve". Without turning around I knew it was the assassin. He turned off his cloaking device and he rested his sniper rifle on the back of his neck. I gave him his orders saying. "Go and scout the orks main camp, take the north bridges route, attacks their have been rare so you shouldn't be bothered". Without saying a word he turned on his cloaking device and left. he was so silent and swift my guardsmen didn’t even notice him moving about. He slipped right past the few guardsmen I had placed their and crossed the bridge, and spotted a crippled building that was 3 storys tall, perfect for scouting. He snuck inside the building and looked around for the stairs. He noticed that dust and cobwebs had made themselfs at home to this building, to even find a spider in this wartorn city was something of a marvel. He looked down a corrider and finally found the stair case. He started to ascend 1 step at a time, cautiously and constantly looking around. he had finally reached the top. He spotted a window that was broken from the outside, great place to scout. He put his rifle on the window and looked through his scope......there the assassin saw them. The whole ork assault force was in the north, the orks from outside the city had all gone through the network to meet at this one spot, and they knew that the imperial guard general that has been causing them so much trouble is here, and they are going to kill him and retake the planet in this one, giant push. He quietly radioed HQ and said softly "the ork forces are going to strike the north..." as soon as the words left his lips he noticed that a big mek(6) appeared to be staring right at him. He wondered to himself. Does he notice me? or is he staring at the building im in... He barely finished thinking before an ork tank fired upon the building he was in. When i got the transmission I was in disbelief. "The orks are attacking the north?!?!. I have most of my defenses in the south!!! "ORDER ALL GUARDSMEN TO THE NORTH, LEAVE THE HELLHOUNDS TO GUARD THE SOUTH INCASE THE ORKS FLANK". I hurried outside and from afar I could see their war banners, and hear the charging of their tanks and troops. I had the guardsmen form a line near the bridge and had the artillery on stand by. I left the HQ and started heading towards the bridge as fast as I could. As soon as I got there I made my way to the front of the guardsmen and shouted. " Loyal men of the imperium, sons of cadia, proud members of the 501st, most people who have never faced the orks in combat think of them as mindless barbarians, but these mindless barbarians have sent small attacks so we wouldn’t fortify our north flank and are sending their hammer to attack it." I stared off into the distance and saw the orks advancing. I turned back to the guardsmen and said "We will repel the hammer of the orks with the shield of the emperor and when our reinforcments arrive we will strike them, blow from blow we will beat down this ork incursion until this planet has been rid of the xeno filth. You will not fail, you will not faulter, you will not allow the orks to gain a very meter of the soil, and you will NOT allow the orks to break your indomitable will". I pulled out my sword, aimed it towards the green tide and shouted. "GLORY TO THE EMPEROR, GLORY TO THE FIRST MAN TO DIE, GLORY TO THE 501ST!" and the orkish tide advanced yelling "WAAAGH".
