It seems there is more to the heart than I had expected. While it acts as the central core of emotions, it also seems to act as a container for memories. These memories that we have seem to have a sort of connection to our emotions, meaning they seem to affect our feelings. When we remember something, we experience an emotional remembrance. In other words, we experience the same emotion we did when the events of the memory occurred. Emotional déjà vu? Perhaps, but then we experience such a thing too many times in our life. Feeling the same emotions time and time again, sparked from memories of events that occurred in the past. Good memories trigger positive emotions while bad memories trigger the negative ones. Simple concept, really. But I have noticed that the opposite can occur, where emotions seem to trigger memories. For instance, if one experiences a certain emotion, it makes that person try to remember the last time he/she felt that emotion. Or, if the person experiences a terrible emotion such as depression, he/she tries to recall a time when he/she was happy. So, an emotion can attach itself to a memory and not only make a person simply remember that time, but also remember the feeling the heart felt.
Another opposite seems to occur also. It would seem that we tend to “forget” certain events in our past. Perhaps emotions have something to do with it. Perhaps emotions block out certain memories in a way similar to how it shields the heart. For example, perhaps the positive emotions try to prevent us from remembering some bad memories so that our current happy mood does not take a turn for the worse.
If all this is true, then perhaps the key is memories and how they link to emotion. Perhaps by stimulating certain positive memories, the heart can be happier and thus unlock itself..
