Chapter Ten San Antonio
The phone on her desk began to ring. Claire reached for the phone and flipped it open. “Hello?” “Claire?” The voice on the other end of the phone nearly made her fall out of her chair. She could barely get the words out of her mouth as she said, “wiL…?” She could tell he was smiling on the other end, but she didn’t understand why he was smiling or why he was calling. Sami probably put him up to this, since it was her number he was calling from. “Hey, Claire. How are you?” “For the world ending, I’m pretty good,” she managed to say. wiL laughed. “I’m glad to hear that. You know we’re picking you up, right?” “Of course! I can’t wait!” “Neither can I.” Claire nearly fell off her chair again when she heard him say that. The next thing he said was what landed her on the floor. “I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately, Claire. Ever since this whole end of the world thing, I’ve been thinking ‘who’s my special someone?’. I mean, Troy is head over heels for Sami; it’s really kind of cute actually. He has to drive tonight and she’s right up there with him.” “Awww, that does sound cute!” “Yeah, they’ve been pretty much inseparable since we picked her up. I’m afraid that they’ll start kissing and crash the goddamn bus before we get to you,” Claire giggled. “You better be careful, wiL!” He laughed with her. “I know. I was kind of worried about letting him drive because I really don’t want to crash. I really want to see you, Claire. I’ve missed you,” he paused for a moment. “I love you.” Claire tried her best to stifle the squeak that was about to escape from her mouth but she wasn’t doing a very good job. She didn’t want to leave him hanging on the other end of the phone line but she was so shocked. This was wiL Francis, after all- ******** celebrity, rock star wiL Francis. The man of her dreams wiL Francis. So she decided to finally say the words that she was never able to say before to anybody out loud, not even to herself, to the one man she had been dying to say them to. “I…I…I love you too, wiL.” “You do?! Really?!” He seemed more surprised than she was. Claire couldn’t help but smile. “Of course I do!” “Claire, you don’t know how happy this makes me. God, I wish I was next to you right now.” Claire let out a little squeak and wiL laughed. “You’re adorable,” he said and he paused for a moment. “I can’t wait to kiss you.” “wiL!” She said, her face bright red. “What, my love?” “You’re going to have to go a bit slower. I’m not used to this.” “Not used to what?” “All this affection, especially from someone I really…love.” “Okay, okay, I’ll try not to freak you out. To tell you the truth, I’m not really used to this either. But I hope to see you in a few days. I’ll definitely be calling you. I have to go now, though. I’ve been up for way too long. Night, Claire. You’ve made me the happiest man in the whole doomed world.” “Goodnight, wiL,” she said, her face covered completely by a blush. She looked at her cell phone in awe, trying to figure out if that conversation really just happened. She pinched herself on the arm, which hurt, so she knew she wasn’t dreaming. “Kool Aid,” she said to herself, “I need some Kool Aid.” She got up from her chair and walked to the kitchen and began to make some Kool Aid. Next to chocolate milk, it was one of her favorite drinks. She dumped piles and piles of sugar into her cup and took a sip. It was perfect, much like wiL Fran- She shook her head, trying to get the image of wiL without a shirt out of her mind. She took another sip of her Kool Aid and tried her best not to think about wiL, which was about as fruitful as draining a lake with a tablespoon. She almost was finished with her drink when the phone rang, making her jump about 50 feet. She didn’t think she would be able to handle talking to wiL again; she loved him but the amount of blood that was rushing to her head was enough to make her pass out cold. With a shaky hand she answered the phone.
