Pieces of the Heart
That morning was just like all of the others. The sun hid just under the horizon, sending sleepy grey mist over the tall tower of the order. The quiet clinking and hushed sounds of the science department echoed like a broken lullaby through the labyrinth of corridors.
As Allen opened his pale silver eyes, he took in the cracked stone pattern of his ceiling, softly tracing the greys, blacks and reds with his eyes.
'Wait...red?'
Allen sat up with a jerk, looking around his room. The first thing he noticed was that half of his stuff was a reddish color. The next thing he realized was that all of the 'half-red' objects he was looking at were broken and mangled on the floor. Allen traced the lines of a chair, splintered and lying like a fallen bird across his floor, liberally sprinkled with the pages of a book he had been reading, as well one of the blankets he had been using, ripped to shreds in what had obviously been a violent manner.
He heard the <plat> sound of liquid contacting with fabric, and when he looked for the source, he saw small circles of a dark liquid on the sheets in front of him. As he peered over them, another fell. Allen quickly pulled a shaking hand up to his face, determining the origin of the blood to be himself. When he pulled his hand away, his fingers were coated with the crimson liquid.
He ripped the covers from his bed and dashed to the long standing mirror, still intact in the corner of his room. His left eye, his cursed eye, was covered in the same blood that was falling from his face like tears. His cheek was smudged from where he had touched it.
"W... whats happening...?" he pressed the ball of his palm into his eye, trying to stem the flow. He turned to gaze at his destroyed room. There was no one there. The door was locked and closed, as well as the window, so how..?!
A sharp n** at his ear caused him to jump and yelp in pain. He turned quickly to find an irritated Tim floating by his face.
"Good morning Tim..." Allen tried to be bright, but the golem wasn't fooled, and landed on his shoulder, gently nuzzling the boys cheek. Allen smiled softly, but frowned when Tim resumed his flying.
"Tim..." Allen said sadly "you've got blood all over you now..." The golem ignored him as it looped happily around the boys head, trying to spur him to action.
"well..." Allen sighed, turning to look back into the mirror at himself,
"time to clean up."
***
"I look ridiculous..." Allen could almost hear his tiny golem dying of laughter at the new addition to his uniform.
"I look like Lavi" The boy leaned closer to his reflection and pulled his silver hair away to reveal a black eye patch. Tim dropped to the floor like a stone, rolling and struggling to stand.
"I can't help it!" Allen snapped, "the blood was showing through the gauze!" As if to emphasize his point, he directed a hand at the bloody mess of gauze resting innocently on his desk. Tim froze and Allen felt worse than before.
"Oh Tim..." He sank to his knees in front of the golem and pulled it into a hug, cupping it in his hands. "Whats happening to me? Why is someone doing this...?" Tim nestled into the boys hands, trying to comfort him, as well as remove the leftover bloodstains.

Lavi was sitting in the cafeteria, boredly nibbling on a piece of toast and absentmindedly wondering what he was going to do that day.
"Geeze!" he moaned, "i finally get a day off from that old panda, and no one is around!!" he flopped over the table, wiggling his butt in the air.
"I'm so booooooooooooored.... " he whined. "Boooooored... booooooooooooooored... BOOOOOO-"
"Will you just shut up already?! Baka Usagi!!"
Lavi's head shot up toward the voice.
"Yuu-chan!!" He cried, little hearts and flowers floating around his head. Kanda's glare turned venomous, wilting the flowers and causing the hearts to explode.
"...what..?" he growled.
"Geeze yuu-chan" lavi sighed, poking one of the dead flowers with a stick in a rather non-caring manner, "i paid alot for those..."
Kanda's glare increased and lavi grinned nervously.
"e heh... i mean... i thought you were out on a mission! yeah, that's definitely what i said." he nodded.
Kanda stomped over to the serving window, muttering something about 'rabbit stew', but Lavi just giggled and returned to poking his toast (with a stick) and waiting for the anti-social samurai to come and sit by him. Kanda grabbed the plate of soba offered to him through the window and stomped back through the rows of tables. Lavi grinned, but looked down to stare at his toast.
"Ne, kanda... I'm kinda concerned... about... eh?" lavi looked up to see kanda, but instead saw an empty table, and no sign of the usually stoic samurai.
"eh?" he blinked, looking around. "eh? eh?" He turned and spotted kanda 3 tables behind him, silently eating his noodles. Lavi abandoned his toast and bounded over to the table.
"AWWW, com'on Yuu! Don't be so heartless!" Lavi put on his best puppy face.
"shut up. I'm trying to eat." kanda snapped. Lavi giggled and sat, but his laughter was cut short when he noticed a familiar head of white hair enter the room.
"Allen..." it was almost a gasp. Kanda pretended not to hear, but lavi could see him watching from the corner of his eye. Both boys sat in silence. Allen moved over to the food window and spoke quickly with Jerry, who disappeared shortly after. Allen stood nervously, peeking behind himself and twisting the hem of his shirt in his fingers. He jumped when he spotted lavi, who smiled and waved. Waving back, he fidgeted unsurly, and was relieved when Jerry returned with his food. Grabbing the tray which held only a single bowl of soup, he left the mess hall.
Lavi stared, mouth agape, at the closed door where Allen had just been. After a moment, he turned to the samurai.
"okay... you saw all of that right?"
Kanda grunted.
"there were soooo many things wrong with that picture. He only had ONE bowl of soup! ONE!"
Kanda ignored him.
"and you saw it right?"
"saw what?"
Lavi's gaze returned to the doorway. "what do you mean 'what?'. He was wearing an eye patch."
"You wear one too baka." kanda pointed out. "If you're so worried, why don't you go talk to him."
Lavi looked at kanda from the corner of his eye. The Japanese boy sat quietly, gently poking his soba with a chopstick and supporting his head with the back of his other hand.
'He'll never say it' Lavi grinned mentally, 'but he's worried too...'
"oi." the samurai called without removing his gaze from his food. Lavi wondered if he thought it was going to speak, or move or something, the way he stared it down.
"yeah?"
"Stop talking about me in your head."
Lavi stared for a moment, caught off guard. Then he smiled. "Ahh Yuu..." he shrugged his hands up in defeat. "Yuu know me too well."
Kanda growled as Lavi rose from his seat. "I guess I'll go check on our little moyashi-kun! Ja'ne, Yuu~!"
The crisp &snap& of a chopstick was all it took to send lavi running from the table.
Kanda sighed as he put the broken utensil next to his bowl and stared into his soba.
"why...?" he said softly "why cant i get rid of this uneasy feeling...?"
He leaned over, running his fingers through his long raven hair. The smell of his usually favorite food was now making him nauseous.
"Something... is very wrong."
***
Allen came to the door of his room. He carefully transferred the tray, holding a single bowl of soup, to one arm. Allen looked at the bowl and smiled at how he had kept it all in the bowl, even when rushing from the cafeteria. He sighed.
"lavi must think I'm a total jerk..." He reached out for the doorknob, but when he closed his hand, all he felt was air.
'that's weird...' he thought. Though the doorknob looked close enough, he still wasn't touching it. He reached out again, taking a step forward, but this time his hand collided with the wood of the door with a 'thump'. Allen raised an eyebrow, bringing the hand to his face to examine it.
"Its caused by your eye patch." a voice said softly. "you lose depth-perception if you wear one for too long..."
Allen spun around to see Lavi a few feet away and leaning on the railing of the hallway.
"yo." he said, raising his hand in greeting.
"ah.." Allen spun to the side, hoping to hide his eye patch behind his silver hair. "H-h-hey."
"eh?!" lavi cried, moving fro his spot by the rail and over to the small boy, looking at him with sadness. "'hey?' That's all i get? After you ditched me in the cafeteria?!"
Allen looked away. "I just... I'm not really feeling-"
"I get it, i get it." lavi waved his hand in the air, as if waving the excuse away.
Allen lowered his head, hiding his face in his hair and looking away. He had been right. Lavi thought he was a jerk. But he just couldn't tell him what was happening! What would he think about poor Allen who was letting someone walk all over him...
Suddenly, a hand invaded his small sanctuary of hair. Fingertips gently touched his cheek, and guided his face upward toward lavi's. A silver eye met green, and he felt frozen in place, somehow still managing to hold his food tray.
"listen." lavi said softly, pulling Allen closer. "Don't hide from me." Another hand reached up and swept the silver locks from Allens face, revealing the eye patch. it almost seemed like an intruder on the small boys face, this ghastly black cloth hiding the stormy silver eye from the world. Lavi's fingertips gently brushed over it.
There was a crash as a hand snapped onto Lavi's wrist. Shards of porcelain flew in all directions as the soup seeped into the cracks in the stone and vanished.
"Don't." Allen said sternly. The previously shy eye had become cold with determination. Lavi pulled his arm down, and Allen's followed, still gripped tightly onto the boys wrist. Instead, Lavi leaned forward, inching closer to Allens face with his own. Caught by surprise, Allen face turned a light shade of pink.
"L-lavi..." Allen stuttered, trying to lean away from the boy, but finding his hand caught. Lavi continued to stare into the boy's eyes, his face unreadable. Allen felt himself squirming under the scrutinizing gaze. It felt as if Lavi was reading his deepest secrets.
"Allen." The boy jumped at the sudden call. Lavi looked very serious.
"Whats wrong?"
Allen blinked back, wondering if he could get away with pretending nothing was wrong.
"Whats wrong?" lavi pressed, leaning closer again, still staring. Allen looked away. He couldn't stand that gaze ripping him apart.
"nothings wrong... I'm f-fine." Allen tried.
"Bull." lavi spat back. "so I'm guessing this new fashion statement was just a joke then?" Lavi's free hand came up to point at the eye patch again.
"i-i-its... nothing..." Allen was starting to shake. What if lavi found out? What would happen...?
"Allen..."
Allen looked up at this. Lavi sounded sad, or hurt, and he just couldn't help from hating himself for that. The red head was looking at him more softly. "please..."
Allen felt the tears before he realized them. He had to tell lavi. He couldn't keep it a secret anymore. He felt a massive weight lift off his shoulders at this thought.
"A-Allen?!" lavi's face switched to surprise. Allen blinked in confusion, until he felt something slide down the left side of his face.
"You're bleeding!" Lavi cried, pulling his hands away from the boy who quickly brought his own up to stop the blood from dripping all over his clothing.
"ah..." Allen looked at the blood on his hands. "i thought it had stopped..." He was interrupted by a hand grabbing his wrist and quickly tugging him into his own room, leaving the broken bowl abandoned in the hallway.
"sit." lavi commanded as he rushed into Allen's bathroom. After a moment, a rag flew out at the boy, which Allen caught and pressed to his face.
"When did this happen?" lavi called from the bathroom.
"T-this morning..." Allen replied, twirling an edge of the rag in his fingers. I woke up and it was just bleeding..."
Lavi sighed as he came out of the bathroom carrying a bowl and towel, along with a new set of gauze. Lavi sat next to Allen on the bed, shoving the bowl into the boys hands. Allen looked down to see it was water.
"whats this for..?" Allen blinked.
"well, we gotta get you cleaned up!" lavi smiled. "Can't have you bleeding all over the place, now can we?"
Allen gulped as Lavi reached a hand up to his face, then pulled back sharply.
"you're not just going to... rip it off are you?"
"No way!" Lavi cried. "well... not anymore at least."
Allen deadpanned.
"Just let Uncle Lavi see you." Lavi grinned, reaching up again. Allen leaned forward, and Lavi gently grabbed a corner of the patch, pulling it off slowly. He tried not to look surprised at the blood soaked gauze underneath as he gingerly pulled it off. Allen's eye underneath was shut, blood leaking from the lid. Lavi grabbed another rag that he had brought out and placed it into the bowl of water in Allen's lap. After a moment, he lifted the rag and wrung the water out of it. He lifted it to Allen's eye.
"W-w-what are you... "
Lavi leaned back and sighed. "Well, you see Allen, I'm about to beat you silly with a wet rag. Now if you don't mind, could you hold still?"
Allen blinked before giggling at the image. Lavi smiled it return. It was nice to see Allen a little more relaxed.
"okay, here we go!" lavi cheered, bringing the rag up to Allens face and gently wiping at his eye. Allen was startled at how soft Lavi's touch was. He was as gentle as Allen imagined a mother would be. After a few moments, lavi seemed satisfied with the amount of gore he had removed, and placed the rag into the bowl, staining the water a sick pink. He pulled up a corner of the towel he held and dried the boys face. Allen squinted for a moment, before opening his eye. Everything was normal colored now.
"did it stop?" Allen asked, feeling slightly more cheerful. Lavi stared at him as if he had grown another head.
"D... Does... Can you... see... alright?" lavi tried to piece his sentence together, but couldn't kick his mind into gear.
"Whats wrong?" Allen asked, confused as to his friends behavior. He stood and maneuvered his way over to the long standing mirror. "is something..." he froze when he looked in the mirror.
"A-Allen..." lavi said softly from the bed. "I-i-its okay... i.. um... I'm sure... ah..." lavi floundered for words as he stared at the back of the boy who seemed to have turned to stone.
"I..."
Lavi perked at the word of the other boy.
"I... I must have..."
"Allen... its gonna be okay..."
"I must have done something horrible... to be punished so..."
Lavi's face fell.
Along with Allen.
