Pieces of the Heart part 4
"Well..."
Komoui looked at the chart in his hands, glancing over Allen's test results. Allen looked at him eagerly from his place on the silver examining table, his fingers refastening the buttons of his white shirt.
"Your body looks normal."
The Chief raised an eyebrow at the chart, as if he suspected that it was lying. "You don't even have a trace of a cold. The only thing that's different is your curse..."
"How can that be?!" Lavi snapped from his place by the door. He and lenalee had re-entered once the exam had ended, and were now approaching the boy at the table. "His eye was bleeding komoui! Eyes don't just do that! And he looks horribly and hasn't slept well in AGES!"
"Gee, thanks." Allen sighed, slumping on the table.
"All i can say is that it might be insomnia." Komoui replied. "Allen's been very stressed about the disappearance of his curse." The scientist stepped forward and looked into Allen's eyes. He brought his hand up and moved the boy's lids, pointing his face toward the ceiling. "But it seems like the only problem is that the curse is completely disappearing." Komoui pointed to what was left of the scar on the boys face. The line was dotted, and most of the pentacle on Allen's forehead had already vanished.
"But other than that..?" Lenalee said quietly.
Komoui looked at Allen with uncertainty. The boy squirmed under his gaze.
"You should tell him." Lavi said, surprising the Lee siblings. Allen passed him a pleading gaze, which lavi returned with a stare. Allen's eyes moved to the curious siblings, then down onto the white tile floor.
"There have been... weird.. accidents." Allen said, careful on his choice of words.
"What do you mean?" Komoui asked. His face had fallen from concern to utter seriousness.
"um... voices..." Allen said softly, as if afraid that just mentioning them would make them appear and start taunting him again.
"Who's?"
"I don't know."
"What do they say?"
Allen fidgeted, twisting his hands in his shirt. "My name."
Komoui blinked in confusion. "anything else?"
"Sometimes they laugh at me... when i get scared... "
"What do you mean?" Komoui questioned.
Allen squirmed on his seat. "When i'm alone... they call out to me.. and when i get scared, they think... its funny..."
"Could it be a prank nii-san?" Lenalee said softly, placing a hand on his shoulder to catch his attention. Allen looked at the girl in disbelief.
"I don't know." Komoui sighed. "anything else?"
To his surprise, Allen nodded.
"My room... sometimes, when i wake up, things are broken, or torn, or have been moved... It hasn't happened since lavi was here, and the doors and windows were always locked..."
Komoui looked to lavi who nodded.
"I did see, one time, a chair and book ripped apart on Allen's floor." the red head explained. "but i didn't question it."
Komoui's face was pulled tight, and Lenalee looked completely frightened.
"This is very serious." komoui growled. "If this was a prank, it has gone too far. It almost sounds like someone wants to hurt you, or is trying to frighten you. Do you have any ideas of who it might be, or what they want?"
Allen shook his head no, staring sadly at the floor.
Komoui sighed. "in any case, i think it would be best for Lavi to accompany you at all times for now. Ill get to work on looking for clues."
Both boys nodded.
"Why don't we call it a night." Komoui said, glancing at his watch. It was 7 in the morning. "er... day. You two head back and try to get some sleep." He smiled softly at the boys, trying to reassure them. Allen nodded gratefully before carefully standing off the examining table, testing his feet.
"Stable?" lavi asked.
"I think so..." Allen moved around a little. The pair bid goodbye to Komoui, along with Lenalee who wanted to see them off, and headed for Allen's room.
"Allen..." Lenalee stopped after a few minutes of silence through the corridors. "Why...?"
Allen stopped, but stayed quiet.
"Why didn't you tell us it was getting this bad!?" She grabbed his shoulder and turned him around to face her. His eyes were shining.
"Its hard." lavi said softly to no one in particular. "To admit that something is wrong, and you cant fix it. To admit a fault to someone and ask for help, even if it is a close friend, is still very difficult. It's scary."
Lenalee turned back to Allen to see tears streaming down the boys face. He choked back a sob before turning out of Lenalee's grasp and rushing to his room, disappearing into it.
Lenalee stood, sniffing softly.
"I'm sorry." Lavi said.
"Why are you apologizing?" lenalee tried to smile at the bookman apprentice who just stared sadly back. She was wiping her tears away with both hands. "This is hard on all of us.."
"AAHHHHHH!"
"Allen!" The two heads snapped down the corridor toward the boys room. Before Lenalee could even move, lavi had dashed ahead. He reached the door at the same moment as Kanda. Why the samurai was there, lavi could have guessed if he had the time, but right now, it wasn't important. Lenalee rushed up behind them.
The door was wrenched open.
The group stared at the mess inside Allen's room. Blankets were ripped and strewn about. A pillow had (seemingly" wink exploded and feathers coated the room, some still floating innocently in the air. Allen's desk had been broken in half, as if a heavy object had landed in the center. Clothing was torn and books were destroyed. Over by the bed, kneeling on the floor, was Allen.
"Allen!" lavi cried, rushing over to the boy along with Kanda. "What happened?!"
Allen seemed stunned. He stared blankly into space.
"Wake up Moyashi!" Kanda snapped, grabbing the boys arm and pulling him to a space in the room that wasn't covered in destruction. When Allen realized his presence, he instantly turned, grabbing Kanda around the waist and burying his face into the boys uniform.
"o-oi..." kanda said softly. Allen was shaking horribly.
"Hey..." lavi said softly. "what is..." he leaned next to the bed where Allen had been. On the floor was a small golden object, glinting in the faint light. It was a gold base, with a white point, almost like a tooth in a...
He gasped. Kanda and Lenalee watched as the red head leaned down and peered under the bed. There, in the back, hidden between a suitcase and an old box...
...were the tiny mangled remains of a golden golem.
***
"what is it?" kanda snapped after lavi had stared under the bed for a full five minutes. He turned his body, moving Allen farther away in case of any danger. When lavi didn't answer, He growled.
"Here." He mumbled, handing Allen to a shaken Lenalee standing by the door. The white haired boy instantly latched onto his new protector. The samurai stomped over to the bookman's side. Lavi sat up with a dazed expression as Kanda leaned into his place and looked under the bed. Lenalee could see his body stiffen for a moment, as if taken by surprise, before he gingerly reached under the bed, gathering something in his hands. After a few checks, he sat up again, gently cupping something in his hands and passing it over to the bookman.
Lenalee, who by this time was practically bouncing to get a better look, gasped at what she saw.
"Timcanpi!"
Allen stiffened, before slowly turning his face out from the girls shoulder. Tim's remains sat in Lavi's hands. It was sparking lightly and falling to pieces. Its wings were shredded and bent at awkward angles, and its little body looked like a pile of stones.
"Who... who would do such a thing?!" lenalee cried, pulling Allen into a tighter hug as she felt the small boy start to shake even harder. Allen pulled away though, and stumbled over to lavi, landing on his knees on the floor right by the red head. Lavi extended his hands, and Allen took the remains gently. He pulled them to his chest and held them tightly.
"Tim..." he cried softly.
Lavi sadly watched the boy, before turning to kanda.
"I thought you said you would be watching!" He hissed. Kanda raised a brow for a moment, taken aback by the sudden snap from the bookman.
"I was." He snapped back. "i was outside from when you and Allen left this morning with lenalee, until just a few moments ago when the moyashi screamed."
Lavi blinked at him in confusion. "But, then..." He reached up, scratching his head in confusion. Kanda's eyes narrowed before he reached out and snatched the bookman's wrist.
"What is this?" kanda said softly, pointing at the strange bruise on the bookman apprentices skin. Lavi blinked at it curiously.
"I don't remember getting that." he said, looking up at kanda. "Which means it happened while i was unconscious or..."
"Asleep." kanda said softly. Lavi stared at him in shock before grabbing his arm and pulling kanda toward the hallway.
"We're going to get komoui!" Lavi cried, making a hasty retreat. Lenalee nodded before curiously watching the two go. Then she returned to comforting Allen.
"That's just sick!" lavi snapped, rubbing at the spot on his hand, then further up his arm. "Whoever it was was in there with me and Allen while we were sleeping?!"
Kanda didn't answer, just kept walking and staring at the floor.
"How could we have not noticed?! Allen only sleeps for a few moments, and when i sleep, he's awake! There's NO way that could have happened!"
"Listen." kanda stopped, and lavi stopped shortly after him. "Something here isn't right. Either Moyashi isn't telling us something, or there is a lot more to this mystery that just a few people taking a prank a little too far. Allen gets harassed, then you get hurt, then that annoying gold golem gets mangled? This thing is escalating... fast." Lavi nodded.
"First, lets go get komoui."
The pair continued their walk in silence.
***
"Allen-kun?" Komoui moved gently in front of the white haired boy. Allen was shaking, still on the floor, and clutching what remained of his golem in his hands.
"Allen-kun? can you hear me?"
Allen jerked his head up, as if suddenly surprised by Komoui's presence, even though the man had been there for almost five minutes looking over Allen.
"K-komoui-san..." he said softly, sounding almost relieved. For a moment, he looked like he was going to smile, but then his face tightened and instead he stretched out his hands, showing the poor golem to komoui like a child holding a dead bird.
"Tim..."
"I know Allen-kun." komoui said softly, extending his hands to take the broken pieces. He quickly handed them over to Reevers.
"You know what to do." he said quietly, keeping out of Allen's earshot. Reevers nodded before rushing off.
Allen watched the man go with increasing panic.
"What... what are you-!"
"Its all right Allen-kun." Komoui said softly, pulling the boy off the floor by his arms and sitting him on the bed. "Reevers is going to help Tim regenerate."
Komoui watched the panic slowly slip from Allen's face.
"So now what?" Lavi asked from his place by the door. Allen didn't seem to notice him.
"Has this happened before Allen-kun?" komoui said softly, placing a hand on the boys shoulder. Allen shook his head no.
"Its always been my stuff, and it was never to the extent where someone... got hurt..."
Lavi looked to kanda, who continued to stare into the room.
"Maybe it was because of Tim's recording feature?" Lenalee said softly from her place in the corner. "Tim must have seen the person who was doing it."
"Gah!" komoui cried, smacking a hand to his forehead. "Why didn't i think to check Tim!?"
The room fell into an awkward silence.
"Wait." kanda said. He stared intently into the air, as if reading from an invisible book. "Who, besides us, knows about Tim's recording feature? Its not common knowledge, is it?"
The others blinked at him. It was true. Only a rare few knew of Timcanpi's abilities. Cross of course, and Allen, some of the scientists, including komoui and Reevers, johnny and such... along with a few exorcists, kanda, lavi, bookman, lenalee... and a few finders, but other than that...
"Your saying it was someone who knew about Tim?" Komoui scrunched his eyes in concentration. "That gives us quite a selection... either way, we need to figure out who it is."
The others nodded. After a few moments, in which lenalee and lavi began to carefully pick up the pieces of what was left of Allen's furniture, Reevers returned to the room.
"Whats the news?" Komoui asked right away.
"Its not good." Reevers sighed. Allen looked up in horror.
"Ah-i-i mean... Tim is going to be just fine!" he laughed nervously, holding his hands up in defense. "Its just going to... take... a while..."
When everyone stared at him, he elaborated.
"Tim's damage was way past overkill. He was sliced with a serrated object multiple times, and his regenerative structure was damaged. Luckily it wasn't destroyed. We just have to repair it, then wait."
"how long?" Komoui snapped.
"Around a month and a half... maybe 2."
Komoui sighed. They would have to wait for their information.
"This is all my fault..." Allen moaned softly. "I should have taken better care of him..."
"Allen-kun, someone is trying to hurt you." Lenalee said softly. "Its not your fault if you get distracted."
Allen looked great-fully at the girl.
"A-Allen-kun..." she stared back. "Your face..."
Allen blinked. A hand reached up and placed itself on his forehead.
"You're all red." Komoui said softly before pulling his hand away. "And burning up. You have a fever."
Allen stared, as if none of the words were making it to his ears.
"That means up we go beansprout." Kanda growled before moving over to Allen and lifting him off the bed bridal style. Allen blinked in wonder. He was floating...
"He's really out of it." Lavi said softly as the British boy slowly lost his fight with consciousness. "Hopefully he can get some sleep..."
The group nodded as Kanda moved to the door, carrying the boy in the direction of the infirmary.
"Kanda." Lavi said softly, walking beside the samurai. "I need to go speak with Panda-jiji."
Kanda nodded shortly, but lavi could see him increase his grip on the boy in his arms. Assured that Kanda would not let him down, (literally and figuratively XD) he left to search out his teacher.

Lenalee: Ne, author chan, aren't you moving from the plot a little much?
Author: but i like it better this way!! it feels more like what i had in mind. Kanda's not such a jerk, and komoui is more personal, and lavi is much more informed! its better! i just had to let a few people in on what might actually be happening so that things would be more interesting. By the way, keep your eyes on kanda! he knows what hes doing!
Kanda: excuse me? - -
Lavi: Yuu-chan is a regular detective!!
Allen: why do i have to be the damsel in distress!!
Author: because its more believable. *nods* you ALWAYS get into trouble. Plus, it goes with the current manga story line (which was so not planned but added bonus!!)
lavi: so author chan, what should we expect coming up?
author: well lets see... trips into crazy town, detective kanda, mysterious visitors, scary moments, probably not Miranda or krowley (but they will show up one day!!) eventually a Noah or two (or, ya know, all of them XD) and eventually the truth behind what the heck is happening. 3nodding other than that, once we get to talking about the ark, expect a nice visit from yuu-chan in wonderland!
kanda i still hate you for that.
Author: still not caring XD
Allen: I'm right there with you kanda...
Author: ill let you do the honours...
Allen: you're on your own kanda! Until next time everyone, see you in story update 5!
ja'ne!
