Pieces of the Heart
part 6

"Supervisor!"
Komoui turned from his place beside Allen's bed to see Section Leader Reevers leaning on the doorframe of the hospital ward. His face was sunken and he had a cooling patch adhered to his forehead.
"You need to come and sign these documents..." Reevers wafted away like the ghost he seemed to be. Komoui sighed before passing an appologetic smile to his sister.
"Lenalee-chan, will you watch over Allen-kun for me for a moment?"
The dark haired girl smiled and nodded. Komoui returned the gesture before trailing out of the room behind Reevers. Lenalee sighed.
Allen was still out cold. His fever seemed to be dropping, but he still wouldnt wake...
She yawned.
"i must be more tired than i thought..." she mumbled, rubbing her eyes sluggishly. The room seemed to be getting quieter and quieter, and her eyelids felt like lead. "ill just... take a little... break..." she yawned, laying her head on the soft blankets of Allens bed, nestling into her arms. Just as she was falling asleep, she thought she felt movement beneith her, and spotted a pair of grey eyes, as dark as a storm on the ocean.
'...allen?'

Kanda's eye twitched for the thirty-seventh time as he stood in front of the finder who had asked for a brief moment of his time, only to drag him somewhere completely random and bore him to death. Everything about the finder was boring, from his straight cut boring brown hair, to his monotonous voice, and all the way down to his straight cut clean and properly boring white socks. Kandas eye twitched again.
'thirty-eight...'
He growled lightly. He was supposed to be keeping an eye on that Baka moyashi for that annoying usagi. He knew that when lavi got back he was going to be furious that Kanda left the helpless boy alone with that crazy head cheif and his overly clingy sister. He sighed.
That finder was standing there... blabing to him about... something... It wasn't like Kanda couldnt help it that everything about the man screamed 'let your mind wander'. And it wasnt like kanda wanted to listen to him in the first place...
As his mind wandered, Kanda became occupied in the many ways that he could swiftly end this finders life and return to what he had been doing. Slowly... painfully... quickly was a given...
In the end, he just decided to do it the old fashion way.
With one graceful motion, Mugen was released from its sheath and danced through the air, before finding its way straight through the chest of the boring man before him. His eyes widened as he sank to his knees, hands hovering above the penetrating object. Kanda laughed maniaclly through the shower of blood.
"BEG FOR YOUR LIFE FOOL!!" He laughed, wrenching mugen from its human sheath.
"Why... Kanda-sama... " the finder gurgled. "How could you... -cough- ... do this...-gasp-.. Kanda-sama..."
"Kanda-sama..."
"kanda-sama..."
"kanda-sama..."
"Kanda-sama?"
Kanda jerked back to reality, blinking at the finder who was still whole and living, and being boring, right in front of him.
"..."
"You didn't hear me, did you."
"<explative>"
"Alright... i'll explain it again..."
And Kanda proceded to beat his head on the wall.

Lavi was making good time from the library to the medical wing. He knew that kanda wouldn't want to be stuck babysitting an unconsious person for half of the day, and he, himself, would feel better knowing that he was watching over Allen.
"Kanda's probably standing there scaring off the nurses and cursing at Allen..." lavi laughed to himself. "Nah, he's not that mean..."
He smiled and looked up at the ceiling, crossing his eyes behind his head. He scanned the hallway. It was one that was rarely used, but made a nice shortcut. He blinked when he heard something skitter across the floor. Stopping for a moment, he looked around.
There was nothing but a long, dark, and presumably empty hallway.
"huh..." lavi shrugged before turning again. He walked a few steps before hearing the sound again. It definitly reminded him of something sliding across stone...
Turning once more to glance back, the hallway was exactly as it had been.
"creeepy..." lavi shivered before turning to walk again.
WHAM
Lavi thought he was going to jump out of his skin when the sound of wood slaming into stone reached his ears. He whirled around, glancing at the doors behind him.
"... that one." he picked out the closed door that had definitly not been shut when he passed it. He crept forward, moving silently as he went. One hand twitched over his hammer while the other reached out for the knob.
"its open..." he stared. Gulping and screwing up his courage, he threw the door open.
"KYAAAA!!"
"OMYGODIMSORRY!!"
Lavi turned beet red as he found himself face to face with Miranda, who was currently in the process of changing.
'Thats right! This is her room!!' Lavi's brain screamed.
"SORRY!" lavi screamed again before slaming the door shut and dashing down the hallway, and away from the oh-so-non-existant wrath of the time exorsist.
After a few minutes and a few random twists and turns down hallways, Lavi came to a stop, leaning against a wall and panting for breath. "Geeze..." he huffed before looking around.
"... eh?..." he glanced around some more, turning in a circle. "Where am i..?"
This hallway was completely unfamiliar, not to mention rather dark. He must have ended up in some forgotten back hallway...
"Oh well..." lavi sighed, "Guess ill just keep moving and-" He froze.
It was that sound again. Like something sliding across the floor. It sent cold shivers up his spine.
"M-miranda...?" he looked behind himself, where the sound had come from, but when he turned, the sound came from the other side of the hall.
"M-m-miranda-san... this isnt funny..." lavi called out, turning wildly to try and find the source of the sound.
It was getting closer.
"Yuu-chan?" Lavi turned again. It was closing in on him.
"Come on, this isn't-!"
The hallway spun dangerously as a sickening splatter filled his ears. He coughed, spraying blood down his chest and onto the floor. His eyes spun, trying to focus on anything besides the spots blurring his vision. His head, suddenly weighing a thousand pounds, sank down onto his chest. His knee's buckled, but somthing was holding him up. Using all of his strength, he refocused his eye onto the five dagger like objects penetrating his chest. He could think of a million reasons as to why the bloody knives weren't something he expected to see, but all his body could register was a rough "oh..."
With a jerk, all five knives were removed at once, sending Lavi crashing to the floor in a heap, lying in a puddle of what he guessed was his own blood. His eyes suddenly felt heavy, and he closed them, blocking out the dark hallway and what he guessed was going to be the last thing he saw. Someone laughed softly.
"oh yeah..." Lavi thought, his mind sluggish. Someone had to control whatever weapon was used.
Desperate, he lifted his eyelids one last time, looking at the attacker who was already vanishing down the hallway.
"...you!" He coughed and shuddered, gasping out a breath before his eyes fell shut and his body stilled.

'It's... dark.'
'Where am I?... Who... am I...?'
Slowly, the boy began to regain consiousness.
'I am... I am...'
Allen's eyes flickered open, or at least he thought they did. It was so dark in this place, that he couldnt tell if he was really awake or not.
"Wh-where am I?!" he called. He tried to move, but his body felt stuck to the ground.
"Shut up!" a voice snapped.
Allen blinked in suprise. He really hadn't expected some kind of answer, even if it wasnt helpful at all.
"Who are you?" he called.
"Stop talking!" The voice called back. It sounded familiar...
Allen tried to move again, wrenching at his arms and legs, but it felt as if they were tied down by something unusually strong. He tried to activate his innocence, calling upon the crowned clown... but he couldnt make a connection.
His innocence wouldnt work.
Suddenly, the darkness felt much more heavy and suffocating than he had origionally thought. He shrank back, trying to hide himself in the floor. It felt like he couldnt breathe, like he was being pressed...
Like it was smothering him.
"Who are you?!" he called again, unable to hide the fear in his voice.
This time, he felt the response instead of heard it. A blow to his stomach knocked the wind from his lungs and left him coughing and wheezing for air.
"W...what...?" he choked.
The darkness laughed. It was cold, and cruel... and worst of all...
it was familiar.
Something wet smacked into Allen's face with a splatter. He paled when he recognized the coppery smell.
"Blood..." he whispered.
The darkness began to laugh harder, taking full delight in his shock.
"Stop... STOP LAUGHING!" Allen cried. "What's happening!?"
He felt something pouring onto his hands, over his fingertips. It was everywhere.
"Please... please..." Allen begged, feeling the tears pouring from his eyes. Something felt very wrong. The blood was warm... fresh... someone was hurt, and he couldnt tell who. He pulled at his retraints again, trying desperatly to see through the darkness.
"Stop... Stop it!"
"STOP."
Allen froze in place. The feeling of blood vanished as the strong female voice rang through the dark like a bell.
The darkness was quiet.
"Who's there?" Allen called, trying to twist around in the hopes of seeing something. A small candle-like light flickered to life in the dark.
"I am the light."

Kanda stormed down the corridor, his left eye twitching violently. He had lost count after fifty when his eye just wouldnt stop. He couldnt beleive the nerve of that finder, bothering him to ask about his last mission. That was weeks ago! Okay... maybe it had only been one week, but still! He just had to know about something as insignificant as where his finder had wandered off to. Okay... well maybe that was kind of important, but he could have picked a better time!!
Kanda fumed down the empty hallway. Lavi would be furious that he was gone for so long... and if the bean sprout had woken up... he would get that sad betrayed look on his face, even if he said nothing was wrong, and kanda just didnt feel like dealing with that currently. He stopped for a moment, running a hand through his hair with a sigh. All this stress could not be good for him.
A soft sound echoed through the hallway. Kanda blinked once, before turning around.
It was empty.
He listened, wondering if he would hear the sound again. And he did, but this time from the other side. It sounded like... something sliding across the floor...?
He took a few more steps, then stopped. The sound had definitly come from the hallway he was approaching. He couldnt see down it, because it was too dark. Obviously someone had neglected to change the dead lightbulbs in this area.
"Who's there." kanda ordered.
He heard it again.
His eye twitched.
This was not the time to mess with him. He moved closer to the railing, giving himself pleanty of room to see down the hallway before he reached it, and swiftly drew Mugen. His eyes glanced around, wondering if anyone was watching him and his seemingly insane behavior. He was about to charge the hallway and introduce whoever was bothering him to Mugen when his mind registered that he had seen something strange...
He froze, whipping his head back toward the opposite side of the central corridor, and followed it a few stories up. A black shape was moving around in a rather un-natural manner. Kanda stared, sharpening his gaze. Something was definitly off about that thing. Suddenly, it slumped over the railing.
"L...lenalee?" Kanda blinked at the girl, hanging over the rail in a rather dangerous fashion. After a moment, he saw something else.
Someone was up there with her.
He saw a flash of silver, before the girl tumbled over the edge.
"Lenalee!" Kanda cried out, leaning against the railing and returning Mugen to its sheath. He could tell by her inaction that she was either out cold or...
"Che." Kanda jumped up onto the railing, squating down and preparing to jump. It was a long distance, but if he could make it to the floating platform, and then use it to propel himself, he could do it. All that mattered was timing.
He sprung forward, shooting off the railing and landing on the floating island. Springing his legs, he leaped again. He grit his teeth. 'This is going to be close!'
He streched out his arms, reaching for the falling girl, and slammed into her, gripping her by the shoulders. He pulled her up against his chest. Now that he had her though, there was only one problem.
Landing.
"oh, this is gonna suck." kanda hissed as he twisted his body with lenalee's weight, flying back first toward the opposite hall. He braced the girl for impact.
He felt his shoulders crumple as he smashed into the stone railing, which crumpled immediatly. He continued forward, and slamed into the wall, smacking it with the back of his skull. A crater pattern webbed out from behind him as he let out a strangled groan and sank to the floor. Lenalee was still in his arms, resting in his lap. Kanda took a moment to asses that she was relativly unharmed. The corridor swam. Then he heard it.
Soft laughter.
Grunting in pain, he reached down and pulled Mugen from his belt. His mind was fuzzy, but he was still an exorsist. Stabbing the sword into the ground, he growled.
There was no way he was going to let his guard down against some psycopathic freak... even if he was blacking out.
***

"AAAUGH!" Allen cried out as he felt something sharp rip at his right arm, just above his wrist. He winced, hissing in pain.
"Please!" he called to the small light. "...Help!"
The light burst into a million beams, reflecting off of crystalized walls and illuminating rainbows of light across the room.
The darkness screamed in agony, writhing, moaning, and crying as it dissolved away in smoke. Allen could now see the thick black chains holding him to the ground as they were slowly eaten away by the light. He looked at his right arm. A long cut streched across it, bleeding freely. Once Allen was freed, he pulled his arm to his chest, curling around it protectivly and hissing in pain. It burned horribly. Pulling it away from himself, he could see shadows seeping into the blood and turning the wound black. Groaning in pain, Allen rolled over, burring his face into the cool stone floor of the crystal room, hiding from the sudden brightness.
He jumped when a warm hand touched his cheek. He tried to lift his head, but his body felt so heavy, and his insides felt like they were squirming. He coughed and sputtered, suddenly gasping for air.
"Be calm." A girls voice floated like music in the air. Allen suddenly felt like all of his stress was leaking out of him as his body melted into relaxation.
"W-who.." he croaked. His voice was hoarse. He felt warm hands roll him onto his back as his head was lain on a comfortable cushion. Long golden curls framed the face above him, guarding the soft sky blue eyes and pale pink lips.
"I am a friend." she said soflty. Judging by her voice, Allen figured she wasnt much older than he was. He could see long red sleeves covering her arms as her hands came up to his face. Allen scrunched his eyes expectantly, but the only thing he felt was her gently moving the hair from his face, and the cool breeze.
'wait...'
He blinked his eyes back open, now staring at the clear blue sky.
"How..."
The girl leaned over him again, golden hair tickeling his cheeks.
"you're alright now." She smiled. Allen struggled to sit up, but was held down by the mysterious stranger.
"You must relax." she said. "You've been through alot..."
Allen sighed. She was right. He felt so tired, and just wanted to sleep. He laid an arm across his eyes, closing them to the bright sun. Even though the breeze was cooling, the sun was still very hot, and Allen was beginning to feel like he was over heating.
"Its... so hot..." he moaned.
The girl above him frowned lightly, then turned to look away. Allen blinked up at her.
"Ah, luna." The smile returned to her face. Allen tried to see, but his vision was obscured by the horrendusly bright light. After a moment of silence, Allen felt something cool touch his forehead. He craned into the feeling, trying to escape the heat of the sun.
Suddenly, everything seemed cooler. Allen winced his eyes open to see the leaves of a tree above him. The shade was dark and cool, but still let some of the sun through. His eyes moved closer and latched onto the soothing hand still on his head. He followed it up to dark green eyes. This girl was staring at him with secret intensity. Her dark red hair contrasted with the violet color she was wearing.
"You forget." she said softly, eyes searching through Allen's. "Pure light can be harmful..." The blonde above him shifted uncomfortably, but Allen's eyes remained locked onto eyes of green.
"Welcome."
For an instant, Allen thought of Lavi.
Suddenly, the world shuddered. Everything seemed to faze like a hologram and dissolved slowly. The tree, the light, even the girls vanished, leaving Allen in the darkness once more.
***

Miranda peeked around a corner somewhere in the labyrinth of corridors.
"Lavi-kun..." She called soflty, pulling her jacket tight around her shoulders. She hadn't meant to freak out at him, but he really had startled her...
"Lavi-kun, please come out..." she called again.
A strange sound caught her ears. It sounded like something sliding across the stone floor. And something did slide across the floor, emurged from the darkened hallway she was passing and tapped her foot.
Once she had stopped shreiking and her heart rate fell below the exploding line, she leaned down to examing the object.
"Ah... its... lavi's hammer...?" She picked it up carefully.
"Now why is this-" She stopped twiddling it in her fingers when she felt something sticky on its handle.
"What's this..." she looked closer. It was dark and stained her fingers. It smelled like...
"BLOOD!?" she shrieked.
She was about to run for help when she heard a strange sound, something like a wheeze...
She looked down the dark hall, straining to see through the thick curtain of black. Eventually, her eyes adjusted, and in the darkness something was sprawled on the floor. Something human.
"oh no... OH NO!" Miranda's hands flew to her mouth. "LAVI!!!"

"much better..."

Author: okay... that was kinda lame, but i still laughed at it.
