Pieces of the Heart
Part 7

"Nii-san..."
Lenalee snuggled into the strong arms cradleing her. It had been a long time since her brother had held her like a child, and she never realized how much she missed that close feeling. She shifted slightly, sighing.
"Would you quit squirming?"
"Eh!?" Lenalee's eyes snapped open. That wasnt her brothers voice. Looking up, she spotted the grimicing face of Kanda Yuu.
"My back is still a little tender ya' know." He slurred. Lenalee's face could have made a tomato jealous. She was being held by Kanda. In Kanda's arms.
THE Kanda.
The kill-you-if-you-look-at-me-the-wrong-way-Kanda.
"Im so sorry!" she gasped, squirming around to get up.
"Ah!" kanda hissed
"SORRY!" Lenalee cried again, she squirmed again and Kanda's arms dropped, sending her to the floor.
"Itai..." She hissed, rubbing her back. She looked up at Kanda. The samurai was slumped over, one hand tightly gripping Mugen, which was stabbed in the floor. Behind him was a large crack in the wall. Looking toward the railing, she spotted the missing spot.
"What... happened...?" She sat up and looked at Kanda.
"Che." He spat back. "I should be asking you. You're the one who was thrown over the railing."
"... WHAT!?" She shrieked.
"oi, oi." Kanda moaned, "Not so loud..." he put a hand to his head and, using Mugen, tried to pull himself into an upright position. He wobbled visiously, but steadied when lenalee stood and gently held his shoulder.
"thanks." he mumbled. Lenalee smiled.
"Its the least i could do after you... ah..." She paled.
"What." Kanda followed her gaze down to Mugen. The blade was shining, and covered in blood. Kanda held it up, examining it.
"What... who..." Lenalee stared. Kanda smirked.
"Whoever pushed you came to finish the job." he whipped Mugen in an arch, removing the blood, and wiped it on his coat before resheathing it.
"So you saw who it was?"
"No."
Lenalee blinked at him. "But then.. how did you end up hurting them?"
Kanda shrugged. "training."
Lenalee sighed, giving up on hoping to get answers.
"How's Allen?" Kanda struggled to move a few steps, stopping with a groan. Lenalee froze.
"Oh." she paled. Kanda raised a brow at her.
"I was... the only one with Allen-kun... when i fell asleep..."
"So?" kanda groaned. His head was still spinning too violently for him to come to conclusions on his own.
"Whoever took me... took me from Allen-kun's bedside..." Lenalee was shaking.
Kanda snapped out a curse, when he realized the problem. While he was here with her,
whoever did this was alone with Allen.
"Let's go." He spat, grabbing Lenalee's wrist and trying to walk, only to end up leaning against the wall.
"K-kanda, slow down! Aren't you hurt!?"
"No time!" Kanda snapped. Lenalee paused, then nodded. She activated her dark boots, grabing Kanda's wrist in a tight grip and sped forward, dragging the samurai behind her.
Within moments, the two reached the doors to the infirmary. Lenalee slamed on the breaks and Kanda jerked to a stop after her, grabbing his head and slumping to the ground.
"Che.." he snapped. "Way to help the injured..."
"Ah!" lenalee cried. "Im so sorry! But you said to hurry.. and i just.. i-"
"Whatever." kanda mumbled using the wall to pull himself up. "Who decided to put a freaking spinning hallway here anyway!?" he growled, leaning against the wall and closing his eyes.
"You must have really smacked your head..." lenalee said softly, taking the samurai by the arms and guiding him into the ward. They blinked at what they saw.
The inside of the medical ward was packed with nurses rushing around from bed to bed. Most were speaking with patients while some were running around shouting orders or questions. Kanda instantly gripped onto his head. The noise felt like it was penetrating his skull.
"Ah, kanda!" lenalee cried when the boy she was supporting slumped to the ground. A nurse rushed over.
"Another one?" she asked, before calling over two more nurses. Together, they pulled the unconsious samurai over to one of the few unoccupied beds and began examining him.
"Lenalee?"
The dark haird girl whirled around in all of the confusion to come face to face with her brother. He was wearing a plastic apron, stained with gore, and taking off gloves with the same stains.
"Nii-san..." lenalee gasped, looking around at all of the people who were suddenly injured. "What happened...?"
"Thank god..." komoui sighed with a sad smile, reaching out to lenalee, but stopping when he remembered just what his hands had been covered in. "I was so worried when i came back and you were missing..."
"Brother, whats happening here? Why are all of these people hurt?" she spread her arms to emphasize over the people lying in the beds.
Komoui's face turned serious. "There was a sudden rash of attacks... it seemed to happen in an instant... but..

we've calculated the time of the attacks and learned that it wasn't all at once, but very rapid, one after the other. Whatever attacked did it quickly and silently."
Lenalee seemed stunned for a moment, staring at her brother. Then her eyes passed behind him and onto a bed that was surrounded by a curtain. Beyond the edge she could just see a tuft of red hair.
"ah..." she gasped, then pushed forward, a shaking hand reaching for the curtain and pulling it back.
On the bed was Lavi. His shirt was gone, replaced by a thick wrapping of white gauze, which was faintly starting to turn a sickening pink. Several I.V.s were strapped to his arms, and an oxygen mask fogged lightly over his mouth with each breath.
"L...l-lavi..." lenalee stuttered. Her knees felt like they were going to give out, so she turned, hiding in her brothers shoulder.
"Miranda found him in one of the lower corrodors." Komoui said softly. "He was run through five times with a sharp object that we've yet to locate. He's probably the worst of the victims. Most of the others were just knocked out or lighly cut..."
Lenalee started to sob.
"Well this is most certainly a problem."
The two turned to see Kanda climbing his way out of his bed, much to the annoyance of the nurses trying to hold him down.
"Kanda?" Lenalee stared. "I thought you passed out?"
"Che." Kanda stopped fighting against the nurses, deciding that he could use a break anyway, and lay back on the bed, sitting up against the back. "I didn't pass out. I just needed a break for a minute. It was so freaking noisy in here..."
The Lee siblings sent him sympathetic looks (which he returned with a glare) before Kanda continued.
"So who is the culprit?"
Komoui blinked for a moment, before looking rather sad. "We dont even have any suspects, let alone culprits..." he sighed. "No one saw their attacker..."
"Maybe not." lenalee said softly. "Lavi..."
"Its a slim chance." Komoui looked at said red-heads bed with a grim face. "Most likly he will have either forgotten it or blocked it out. Its a common reaction to trauma..."
"I think its whoever's after Allen."
Komoui turned quickly back to the samurai, who had crossed his arms and was staring at Komoui in a business like manner.
"And what makes you say that...?" komoui said slowly, as if afraid that confronting the dark haired boy would make him retreat.
"Well." Kanda pointed over to Allen's bed. The boy was sleeping in place, as pale as a ghost, and had a new bandage adorning one of his arms. "He was attacked too right?"
Komoui blinked for a moment, and then rushed over to Allen's bed, gently picking up the boy's arm and observing it.
"Nurse!" he called over one of the ladies in white. "How did Mr. Walker hurt his arm?"
The nurse stared for a moment, before calling over another nurse, who was also confused. Neither of them remembered an injury there.
Komoui paled for a moment, before requesting something from one of the nurses. Kanda and Lenalee watched in intrest as a nurse moved away and returned with a pair of scissors. They cut off the bandage.
Gasps flew from the nurses around Allen's bed. Most of them moved away with hands over their mouths, muttering quickly to one another. After a moment, Komoui was the only one less, still holding Allen's arm tightly in one hand. Lenalee tried to see, but from her angle, she couldnt even see the expression on her brothers face. Kanda, however, could.
Komoui was staring down with something like anger. Kanda wasnt sure, because frankly he had never seen komoui look so serious and angry before. Kanda stood, easily now because there were no nurses to hold him, and moved over to the bed. He leaned over Komoui, and felt his stomach twist. Allen's arm was a gory mess, not even close to cleaned properly, dyed brown with dried blood and pink from blood that was fresher, still oozing slightly. And even through all of the gore, Kanda could clearly make out several cuts, forming... something.
It was a word. And it was...
"Mine."
Kanda cursed loudly, turning away and running hand throught his hair. Komoui pulled a basin of water from a nearby counter and began to slowly and delicatly clean the wound.
"W-what is it?" Lenalee tried to lean in, curiosity getting the better of her. Komoui was just trying to figure out a way to deny his sister without her getting angry when Kanda stepped in.
"Just a nasty cut." he snapped. He stalked a few steps and then turned on the girl. "Do you remember seeing anything from when you were attacked?"
"WHAT!?" Komoui whirled around, spraying water from the rag he was holding. He looked at his sister with wide eyes, before she saw him glancing around her for injuries.
"Nii-san." she said softy, spreading her arms for her brother. "I'm okay... really! Kanda-kun took good care of me!"
Komoui turned to kanda, who couldnt tell whether the scientist was more happy that he had saved his preasious sister, or obsurdly angry that he had probably touched her in the process.
"What happend?" Komoui turned back to Lenalee.
"I was in here when i suddenly fell asleep..." Lenalee turned a slight pink. She had had a moment of weakness, and because of it...
"Next thing i knew, i woke up with Kanda in a corridor three stories below."
Komoui was chewing his nails in an effort not to physically attack the dark haired samurai.
"Apperantly" lenalee continued, completely ignoring her brother, "Some one took me from the room while i was sleeping and threw me over the balcony."
"OUTRAGEOUS!" Komoui screamed, earning himself several 'sush's from the nurses. He ignored them and rushed over to his sister, grabbing her by the arms and looking her over again.
"Nii-san im FINE!" lenalee sighed again. "Kanda-kun saved me. If anything, you should be looking over him! He really hurt his head..."
Komoui glanced at Kanda, who rolled his eyes.
"Im fine." he snapped.
Satisfied, Komoui returned his attention to his sister.
"Did you see who did it?"
The room was silent for a moment as both exorsists absorbed the question. Lenalee shook her head first, admitting that she hadn't. She had been asleep. So both of the Lee siblings turned to Kanda, who was staring at the bed in deep thought, searching for an answer in the folds of the crisp white sheet.
"Did you?" Komoui repeated, pulling Kanda from his thoughts. He squinted his eyes, as if trying to see what had happened in the air.
"I saw a shape..." he said slowly. "It was smaller... and..." He stopped short, clamping his mouth shut.
"And...?" The siblings pressed. Kanda looked at them, as if asking a question with only his eyes, before he sighed and shook his head.
"My brain is too jumbled." he muttered. Komoui sighed.
"Well... if you remember anything, be sure to come and tell us." the science head said with and overly exaggerated sigh. He turned to his sister, cooing about the prospect of body guards, but Kanda tuned him out, staring at the white haired teen lying in the next bed over.
Why was is that the stalker had been alone with Allen... and only left a message? If he wanted Allen that badly, he could have just taken the boy while everyone was in chaos. Sure, they wouldn't have gotten too far, but there was a chance they could have completely escaped, and Kanda figured that any crazy stalker would work with those odds. So why would he 'hit and run' like that. The only thing that could happen would be an increase in security around Allen... and maybe said white haired boy freaking out a little... but other than that... there was no gain.
While Kanda continued to struggle with his thought process and the fact that he was getting more questions than answers, he was looking over Allen's form for clues. His eyes came to rest at the tip of the I.V. line, sitting innocently in the crook of Allen left elbow, right above the new white bandaging applied by komoui to hide the 'mark'. The I.V. was surrounded by a nasty dark bruise. This caught Kanda's attention. Weren't the nurses here professional enough to flawlessly attach I.V.'s?
When a nurse came over to check on Allen, Kanda saw his chance.
"Hey." he snapped. The nurse, who was a petite girl with blonde hair and shining blue eyes turned to kanda, a light pink staining her cheeks.
"Is something wrong?" she asked.
"What's with his I.V.?"
The girl moved over, gently lifting Allen's arm by the elbow to look at the offending object. She blinked, then glanced at his other arm, then blinked again.
"Someone put it in the wrong arm." she laid his arm back down across the blankets, being gentle around the wound. "Badly." she added. "Usually the I.V. is in the right side... but for some reason some one moved it. See?"
Kanda leaned in to see her pointing at a small mark on Allen's other arm.
"The I.V. was originally over here."
The girl set about to fixing the mistake while Kanda leaned back in his bed.
Why? Why was Allen being targeted? What did this person want? Why had the white haired boy never seen his attacker? Why was that I.V. in the wrong arm? Why were so many people attacked?

Why did he feel like he had seen Allen next to Lenalee on that balcony...?

Bloopers special!!

Scene!
"Boobies."
Kanda blinked at Allen's arm along with Komoui. Allen began to shake and snort, trying to hold in his laughter.
"...beansprout..." kanda growled as komoui continued to blink in confusion.
Allen burst out laughing, causing the set to fall out of character as people began resetting for the retake.
"What the heck!?" Kanda snapped, throwing Allen's arm back at the now rolling with laughter white haired boy. He could hear Lavi and Lenalee laughing off stage as well.
"S-s-sorry k-kanda!" Allen gasped, trying to control his laughter. "I-i... couldnt... resist..."
"Come on Yuu-chan!" Lavi cried, running over to the two. "You can't be a stick in the mud all of the time!"
Kanda "che'd" before walking away from the group, taking his place in his special chair where his personal attendant started bothering him.
The Author strode over.
"Alright, alright, as much as i think that was HILARIOUS, we still need to keep shooting. So wipe that off and write 'mine' like you were supposed to!" She tossed a rag and a strange looking marker to Allen.
"Aw..." Allen whined, rubbing the cloth over the old fake writing. "Cant i put something funny? Like 'SURPRISE!' or... oh, oh, how about, 'guess who?'!"
The author put her hand to her chin in mock thought.
"Hmmm... no." she shot them down and lavi and lenalee walked away dejectidly.
"Ready on the set!" the author cried as Allen put the final touches to his arm, handing the marker off to a stage hand and rewrapping it before laying down, face calm.
"I dont know how hes not giggleing..." Lavi whispered to lenalee as the girl clamped a hand over her mouth to keep her own laughter silent.
Kanda moved from his chair and Komoui reappeared. Lenalee took her place in the background as the two males began to unwrap Allen's arm again.

And even through all of the gore, Kanda could clearly make out several cuts, forming... something.
It was a word. And it was...
"Pancakes."
Lavi burst out laughing in the background, completely ruining the scene as Allen once again began to giggle and snort into the arm he draped over his head.
"This is ridiculous." Kanda sighed, throwing Allen's arm back at his head, smiling slightly when it hit it's owner with a sharp smack and an "OW! kanda!"
"You did it." Kanda snorted before laughing lightly.
"Allen."
The actors on the set froze as the author came on the scene.
"What did i tell you?"
"No strange words?" Allen cowered.
"And what did you write...?"
"Pan..cakes..?"
The author glared intently before lavi jumped onto the scene.
"Author chan!" He cheered. "Alteara chan came to see you!"
"eh?" the author turned to where lavi pointed before wandering off.
"Thanks lavi." Allen sighed.
"No prob moyashi-chan!" lavi laughed. "If there is one thing that can cool off author chan, its her short attention span!"
The three deadpanned as they watched the author wander for a bit, looking rather oconfused, before she spotted a table filled with food, and began to happily eat lunch.
"Time for a break i guess~" Allen chirped before hopping out of his set bed and running over to the table and joining the author.
"Lunch time!"
"you know... i have the strangest craving for pancakes... hey.. wait a second... "
"LOOK AUTHOR-CHAN A BUTTERFLY!"
"WHERE?!"
