Story Update Nine!
author: is everyone ready for a new update?!
lavi: Ne, author-chan, you seem really cheerful today.
Kanda: you mean more retarded than normal?
Allen: I think your the retarded one. He said cheerful bakanda, cheerful, like, cheer-ful. Say it with me now...
Kanda: *Smacks*
Lavi: buahaha... oh yuu-chan... looks like you went straight to the... PUNCH LINE!! XD
Kanda: I'll show you a punch line...
author: alright, alright, that's enough violence for one opening.
Lenalee: so am i like...not in this story anymore or what?
Author: hush! you'll show up when i want you to. in my opinion thought, you're just a supporting character. - -
Lenalee: *dies*
Komoui: NUUUU MY PRECIOUS LENALEE!!! *dies*
Author: great. Someone get the defibrillators...
Allen: already on it... *sigh*
Lavi: while were recovering two deceased members of our cast, author-chan would like to point out that she doesn't own D.Gray man. If she did... well.. then putting a disclaimer would be rather redundant.
Author: nicely put.

Pieces of the Heart
Part 9

When Allen opened his eyes, the hospital ward was filled with gentile sunshine and warmth. He sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Looking over to Lavi's bed, to say good morning to the red-head, he was met with ruffled covers and no sign of his friend. Looking around, he realized that Kanda was gone as well. The ward was empty.
"Good morning."
Allen jumped, looking back at the chair that had previously been empty, to see Luna, red hair glistening in the sunlight, smiling softly at him.
"Where is everyone?" Allen asked. The girl smiled.
"I have removed them from the picture for now, so that we may have some privacy."
Allen shied away for a moment.
"Why? They're only here to help, so why cant you talk to them? I don't believe you!"
The girl raised a slim brow at the boy, looking on in amusement.
"I don't have any idea what this 'darkness' is that you keep talking about. Where is it? What is it? How do i stop it?! How do i know that you're not lying to me...?
Who are you really?"
The room suddenly darkened, as if the sun was blocked by dark clouds. Allen shivered at the sudden cold feeling in the room. Had he pushed the line...? He was in no condition to fight this girl...
"Should you be asking me that, when you don't know the answer for yourself?"
Allen blinked as the girl waved a hand. A pane of glass appeared in front of him, floating in mid air. It shone in the light for an instant, then Allen could see his reflection. He stared at the sad boy in front of him. Amber brown eyes and brown hair. The only remaining piece of his curse was a small amount of silver on the tips of his hair, and a small piece of the curse under his left eye. He lifted a hand and gently brought it to rest on his reflection.
"I may look different." he said softly, "But i am still-"
"AalLEn... WaaLKer..."
Allen gasped at the hand that clasped over his wrist. It was cold and clammy, and felt dead.
He followed it with his eyes, struggling to keep it from pulling him forward, only to find it was connected to his reflection. No...
it WAS his reflection.
The mirror Allen was all grey, with a twisted grin streching across his face. Darkness swirled around him, turning his hair black and his eyes golden and hard.
"I am Allen Walker!!" It shrieked gleefully. It pulled on Allen's arm, dragging him closer to the glass. "I am Allen Walker!!"
Allen stared in horror as his hand slid through the glass, as if it were water. It burned, like an electric current was flowing through his skin.
"S-stop!" Allen cried, pulling back. "I'm Allen! I'm the real Allen!" He struggled, trying to rip his hand away. "Innocence!!" he cried, trying desperately to activate his crowned clown, but at the small spark that told him his innocence was responding, his body was filled with pain. He screamed, curling into himself in an attempt to stop the searing heat coursing through his veins. He released the activation, and the pain subsided, leaving him numb and panting.
"I. Am. Allen Walker." The darkness growled, taking advantage of the boy's weakened state to pull him into the glass up to his elbow.
"N-no.." Allen cried weakly. He looked to Luna, who was sitting quietly, watching the boys action. "H-help..." he whimpered. "help me!"
A flash of purple caused him to wince as the sound of breaking glass shattered the oppressive feeling in the room. Allen's arm jerked back to his body where he immediately curled around it protectively. He watched as the cracked mirror began to shatter, breaking into pieces that dissolved into smoke. His reflection screamed and writhed, moving into the shadows.
"I-i am... Al-len... Wal..ker..." It gurgled softer and softer until the entire mirror vanished. Allen was left panting, sweat dripping down his face. He couldn't take his eyes off of the empty space where that 'thing' had been.
"So." Allen jumped, snapping his neck around to see Luna, watching him closely. In her hands was the statue, accept, it was moving, waving it's tail softly and looking around the room. "Who are you?"
Allen turned rigid, taking a moment to look back at the space in front of him, then back at the girl.
"Allen Walker." he said, voice unwavering accept for his lack of breath. The girl's cold face broke into a smile.
"Good." she said. She held up her hands, extending the fox to him, which he carefully took. It was small, and was able to comfortably stand on his palm. It shook its fur, sending small bits of black smoke into the air. It looked at him with purple stone eyes.
"This." the girl said, motioning to the fox. "Is your guardian."
Allen nodded. "You already told me that... but i never thought it would come to life like that..."
The animal sat in his hand. It only weighed around he same as a small stone, and it was cool to the touch.
"This creature will be your greatest.. and ONLY ally."
Allen blinked at her. "Why my 'only'? What about my friends?"
"Your friends will not survive an encounter with pure darkness." She said softly. "And if you keep depending on them, they will die."
"Why..?" Allen said softly.
"The darkness is targeting you. It wants to take your body, and use it to create chaos. It will come after you time and time again, and it will kill anyone in the way."
Allen looked confused, so the girl sighed.
"that mark on your arm." She motioned to his gauzed arm, which Allen realized wasn't gauzed anymore. The bloody word "mine" was still clearly visible.
"That is from the darkness."
Allen gasped. "But... i thought... so everything that's been happening..."
"That's right." the girl nodded. "Your destroyed room, the attacks on your friends, all of it comes from darkness."
"How do i stop it!" Allen cried, looking deep into green eyes.
"The only way is to delay it. Inevitably, even that will not be enough, and you will die."
Allen paled.
"But." Luna placed her hands together in a thinking position, resting her chin on them to look closer at Allen. "the longer you survive, the better the situation will be, and the better the chance that you will overcome death."
"Over...Come..?"
"Yes." Luna smiled. "the darkness will try to wear you down, and when you are vulnerable, it will attack. So if you stay strong for as long as possible, then you will survive longer. There will be attacks anyway, but if you keep moving forward, you will survive long enough. If you can last until i arrive, then you will be saved."
"But... aren't you already..."
"No. This is your dream. You are asleep. I am only here through a mental connection."
"What... what do i have to do to survive?" Allen asked. "How can i hold off the darkness."
Luna smiled sadly. "The darkness will attack when you are at your most vulnerable. That means..."
Allen's eyes became heavy, and he swayed with sleep. He could feel his body falling back onto the bed, slipping into unconsciousness.
"Little boy..." the voice floated into the darkness of his mind. "Once you wake up..."

"You must not sleep again."
***

The words rang in Allen's ears as he jerked into consiousness. He felt a chill run up his spine and quickly sat up, trying to force the sleep from his body. He looked across the room to see Kanda holding up one sleeve, and lavi looking at the samurai's arm with concern. Allen caught sight of a dark bruise in a strange shape before the sleeve was forced down and he realized that both boys were staring at him.
"M-morning beansprout!" Lavi laughed nervously.
"What is it." Allen asked, eyes pleading with the two in front of him to not keep secrets from him.
"It's nothing." kanda snapped, but his voice was much less forcefull.
"You're hurt." Allen said softly.
"I said its nothing."
"Don't lie to me!"
Both boys blinked for a moment. Allen hardly ever yelled, let alone at his friends.
"Allen..." Lavi whispered.
"Don't." Allen snapped. "I dont want to hear anything from either of you." Luna's warning was ringing in his ears. He would kill them... "Both of you should just leave me alone!"
"But Allen.."
"Something is after me and you two got involved but this is MY problem so-"
"WILL YOU SHUT UP!"
Allen and Lavi both jumped at Kanda's outburst. He was known to be rude or mean, but it usually didnt have much hatred behind it. But now all Allen felt like doing was cowering in a corner, away from the anger radiating from the samurai.
Kanda sighed for a moment, closing his eyes and running a hand through his hair as if trying to regain his composure.
"People like you tick me off." he growled, much more softly. "You're hurt and can't accept that people want to help you. Im not going to let some smug stalker think that he can get away with attacking people without any retribution. So you can do whatever the heck you want, and i'll do whatever the heck i want, which happens to be beating the crap out of that guy when i get my hands on him, and then we'll all be happy." Kanda smirked at the stunned look on Allen's face before he turned and marched to the door.
"Whatever has you rattled, beansprout, you need to get over it. There's no way im letting some idiot stalker get the best of me."
And with that, Kanda dissapeared out the door.
"Well." Lavi's voice pulled Allen from his stupor. "Like Yuu-chan so artfully put it, we're not going to let this guy get away with hurting you anymore. So just relax Allen-chan!" Lavi smiled, but it faded when Allen curled up in his bed and he heard the soft sounds of crying.
"A..Allen" Lavi pulled the blankets from his bed and turned to stand, carefully distributing his weight to keep pressure off of his injuries. He winced as he made his way slowly over to Allen's bed where he dropped down next to the boy.
"Allen... please dont worry so much..." Lavi smiled sadly, patting the boy on the shoulder. "Let your big brothers take care of everything!"
Allen quieted down, but was still shaking lightly.
"Lavi..." he said softly. "I dont know what to do anymore..."
"What are you talking about Allen?... Didnt i just say-"
"I dont want you to die... i dont want anyone to die!! But i just.. i just!"
"Woah there mate." Lavi grabbed Allen's shoulders and pulled the boy up to look at him. "Who said anything about dying?"
"I...I saw luna again..."
"When?" Lavi snapped.
"Some time today i think... it was sunny... but... she told me it was my dream... so ... i think i was sleeping."
Lavi nodded. "So... what happened?"
Allen explained about the mirror and the darkness, and lavi looked stunned.
"So... its not a person hunting you... but a thing?" Allen nodded.
"And luna said.. that if one of my friends were to fight it... they would die." Lavi's visible eye widened, staring at the boy.
"Well that explains alot." he sighed. Allen looked at him curiously.
"The attacks at the people who were around you... how me and Yuu-chan keep finding weird bruises on ourselves..."
"That's what that was?" Allen gasped. Lavi nodded.
"He woke up this morning with it on his arm, and never felt a thing... and Yuu-chan is a light sleeper too..." Allen gulped.
"Lavi, you and Kanda have to stay away from me!! I can fight by myself, but if one of you gets killed... i'll never be able to forgive myself!" A sharp slap to the face quickly stopped Allen's hysterics.
"And what about us huh!?" Lavi yelled. "How do you think we'll feel if you die!?"
Allen stared with large watery eyes, tears sliding down his face as he gently placed a hand on the growing red spot on his cheek. Lavi sighed.
"Sorry Allen-chan... but you needed a wake-up call." Allen nodded with a small smile.
"So... what should i do now?" Allen's voice was small and meek. "The darkness attacks when I'm sleeping, but i cant stay awake forever..."
"Guess me, you and Yuu-chan will just have to have a couple of slumber parties!" Lavi cheered, swinging an arm around the boys neck. Allen sighed, but smiled none the less.
***

Kanda stared from his place in the corridor. Straight across from him, was the place where he had collided with the railing in an attempt to save lenalee. The railing was broken and the wall behind it was still cratered. Right above that area was the hallway where lavi had been found by miranda. Above that... was the medical ward. All around that area, Kanda recognized hallways where finders had been found unconsious or injured. They were all centered around the hospital ward. He hummed in annoyance, pulling up the sleeve on his arm to stare at the bruise. Now that it had darkened, he could clearly pick out several finger imprints. How could someone have caused such a mark without even waking him!? It just didnt make sense. And when he had looked up... and seen someone with lenalee... a flash of silver... a... a mask maybe?
Kanda shook his head.
There was no way. It could have been. There was no way that Allen would throw lenalee off the balcony, attack several finders, almost kill lavi, and carve something into his arm. His reaction to the situation alone was enought to gage how rattled he was about the whole thing. Kanda must be loosing his mind....
He turned with a grunt, intending to head back to the medical wing.
"Kanda-kun."
The dark haired teen turned. Komoui was standing behind him, his expression hidden behind the shine on his glasses. In his hands, he held something that Kanda had seen and accepted many times, but now...
"We need to talk for a moment."
Kanda felt some emotion he couldnt identify filling his chest. Guilt? Anger? Unknowingly he glared at the supervisor, who took it in without a flinch. Instead, he held out the mission folder for the younger boy.
"I'm sorry."
***

Lavi looked up from his book when he heard the door to the medical wing open with slightly more force than nessicary. That meant it was Kanda. But when he looked up with a grin to welcome the samurai with his usual teasing, he was met with an unreadable expression and the horrible feeling that something was wrong. Luckily, Allen had been taken by Reever's for a final examination reguarding the fever he was almost fully recovered from.
"What is it?" Lavi asked, deciding that playing with an angry kanda was not something he wanted to do in his current state.
In return, Kanda held up the mission folder, unable to meet the bookman's eyes.
"I have to leave." He mumbled. "I can't..."
Lavi stared when the samurai's voice broke off. Kanda must have really been upset to lose his composure.
"Its a two week mission." Kanda growled. "Which means... Allen..."
Lavi blinked, then smiled.
"It's alright Yuu-chan!" he cheered. Kanda continued to stare at a point on the floor. "We'll take good care of Allen-chan. He'll understand. It's a mission. You have to go. It's not like you asked for it."
When Kanda didn't respond, Lavi sighed.
"Geeze Yuu-chan, I can't believe everyone thinks you're so mean when you're really such a softy!" Kanda's eyes snapped to the bookman with a harsh glare. Lavi smiled.
"If it makes you feel any better, i'll explain things to Allen-chan tonight."
Kanda's glare decreased, but Lavi could still feel the anger radiating from the boy. He knew that Kanda would be completely irate if something happened to Allen while he was away, after he had (kinda sorta) promised to keep him safe. He would probably be distracted during the mission as well, which was very dangerous. Before Lavi could voice his concerns though, Kanda turned and stormed out of the room. Lavi sighed. This was not going to be easy. He just hoped that Allen would take the news well.
***

"Oh..."
Nope. Lavi sighed. Not well at all.
"Well..." Allen sighed, smiling lightly. "It is a mission, and we are exorsists. It's not like i can ask him to stay or anything..."
Allen silently prayed that Lavi wouldn't see the trembling in his hands. Sure he trusted Lavi with his life... but something about the samurai just promised protection and safty, like there was nothing that Kanda couldn't defeat. But that was just another one of allen's misconceptions of the boy, along with thinking that he never slept. Even still, he couldn't help but feel a little betrayed. Kanda had made him feel safe in his presence, and now he was just... leaving.
It wasn't fair.
"Don't worry Allen-chan!" Lavi grinned trying to keep Allen from falling into depression. "Even though Yuu-chan will be away, we can still keep a close eye on you! And now that we know whats happening, there's less of a chance of you being attacked right?!"
Allen blinked, then smiled softly. "yeah..."
The silence was short, but akward.
"So..." Lavi winced as he pulled his arms behind his head in a pillow. "That statue thingy..."
"It's a guardian." Allen repeated.
"Right, guardian. What does it do?"
Allen quirked his head for a moment in confusion, before picking the object from the nightstand, turning it over in his hands.
"When i was attacked in my dream... it came to life and saved me..."
"Yeah." lavi nodded. "i remember you saying that."
Allen shrugged. "Other than that... i think its just a statue." Lavi watched as Allen held the small fox gently, petting the cool stone behind the ears.
"Well." lavi grinned, and Allen gulped at the mischevious glint in his eye. "You just have to keep that thing close, and stay away for a while. Not too bad right?"
Allen paled.
***

Kanda walked into the medical ward once more. Lavi and Allen were gone, permittied to eat in the cafeteria since the nurses were tired of carting massive amounts of food to their beds several times each day. He sighed. It would be easier this way.
Slowly, he walked over to Allen's bed, holding a small object in his hand. He reached out for the bedpost, and drapped a small string around it, letting the small circle hang against the wood. The charm on the string glowed softly for a moment and Kanda smiled at it.
"Repel." he said softly, before releasing it. The charm's glow dissapated, and Kanda turned back toward the doors.
With that in place, he would feel much safer leaving for this mission. And maybe Allen would find it, and forgive him as well.

The dark haired teen turned. Komoui was standing behind him, his expression hidden behind the shine on his glasses. In his hands, he held something... wait a sec...
"is that a hotdog?" Kanda blinked in suprise at komoui.
"CUT!!"
"why yes it is!" komoui exclaimed as the set fell into the chaos of resetting. "It has mustard and relish on it!"
Lenalee walked on the set, followed by Lavi and Allen dressed in hospital garb.
"Nii-san... aren't you supposed to be holding a mission folder?"
"But i was hunnnngrrryyyyy..." Komoui whined.
The cast sighed.
"Get your props straight idiot!" Kanda snapped. "I hate these overly emotional scenes, so get it right so we dont have to repeat them!!"
"Aw..." lavi cooed. "Is ickl Yuu-chan feeling frustrated?"
Kanda turned in an instant, Mugen hovering centimeters from Lavi's throat.
"Now kanda..." allen laughed nervously, holding up his hands in the hopes to seperate the two boys (but not get cut). "You know Lavi is just 'like that'."
Kanda 'hmphed' before putting Mugen back in it's sheath.
"Still" kanda snapped. "I'd much rather just kill him if he's going to be 'like that'."
"What do you mean 'like that'?" Lavi whined, looking between the two.
"There's no escaping it. That's just how he is." lenalee shrugged. "'like that'."
"Like what!?" Lavi cried, clinging onto the girl.
"Lavi, if you're going to be 'like that' with my sister... im going to have to kill you." komoui grinned evily, holding up an extremely large drill.
"KYAAA!" lavi screamed as he threw up his hands and ran. "Im not 'like that'! i swear!!"
The author walked past the panicing red-head and the crazy scientist to the others in the group.
"Why is lavi running?" she deadpanned.
"Cuz he's 'like that'."
